My grandson is almost 5 years old.

My oldest granddaughter was about 3 1/2 when she started getting interested in her grandmas camera. She seemed to have a pretty good eye and caught on quickly. I had a Nikon P5000 that I was not using, so I deemed that “her camera” she is 8 now and she still packs that camera around taking pictures of anything that interests her. She has taken care of it and is really pretty good. She has not yet played too much with the manual settings on it, but her technique is very good, so will need to start on learning settings. Gotta encourage them young, get them interested in getting out of the house and learning! Good luck with a camera for your grandson, they can have responsibilities at that age, just have to monitor them and give them guidance.

Okay, I'll bite. Looked up the Lensball, saw their website, lots of pretty pictures of the ball, but I don't see anything showing how you USE it.

What do you DO with it? Does it attach to the front of a lens, and how?

You either hold it in front of your subject, or you can set it on something or use the stand and attach it to a tripod, they are heavy so if you hold it your arm does get tired after awhile. I get frustrated and will put them away in my camera bag for awhile, then I will pull them out and try again, once you get a nice creative shot with it, it is encouraging to use it again. They really aren’t that expensive and do add some different creativity...if you don’t throw it first (I have been tempted several times)! The 60mm is nice to use with a cellphone or a small compact camera, and it is not quite as heavy as the 80mm.

I ordered the Lensball brand from Amazon, I got the 60mm & 80mm. Lensball also sells a small suction cup holder that the base has a tripod mount in it. You have to be extremely careful in sunlight, if the sun hits it, it will burn you in an instant, or anything that is in its way. The glare that was mentioned above is a real issue for me. If I am indoors or in a covered area outdoors, it works great, but out in the open it is very frustrating. You see some really amazing shots done with these, but I feel lucky getting maybe 1 or 2 nice shots without glare out of about 30 or 40! They are fun and frustrating at the same time! Happy lensball hunting.

I have lost a couple off my D7200, I ordered spares to carry in my camera bag. Not sure they are really needed.

This looks like a nice compact camera. I have the CoolPix A900, that I carry everywhere with me instead of lugging my big camera around, but am considering upgrading from the A900 to the A1000, has anyone else checked out this camera? I like the looks of it and it has an EVF and shoots raw. Just looking for some friendly opinions/comments.
Thanks in advance!

Is it fast for focusing and can it be set up for back button focusing? It seems to have more features than the A900, enough to catch my interest!

It’s available for pre-order at Adorama, I have the A900 and I love it for a “pocket-throw in my purse” type of camera, it does not shoot raw, but the A1000 does shoot raw and has an electronic view finder, and a tilting touch screen. Sounds intriguing!

Thanks, cambriaman, I have a year to get acquainted with it. Having had it only one day, I’m still in feature/function discovery mode, and so far I am very pleased. I haven’t really tested full optical zoom, 35x, hand-held, but I can’t imagine that I won’t want (need?) a beanbag or small tripod to get sharp pictures. Any experience with this?

I bought a sturdy monopod that I can use for my Nikon Coolpix A900, it has a 33lb limit so I can also use it with my DSLR with lens and flash attached! It collapses down to 16” so it is easy to take with you!

For those of you with the D7200, how would you rate its handling; meaning the weight, size, etc. I have grown a little weary of both on the beloved D300. This question would be with using the Nikon 18-140 lens.

I can carry my D7200 with the 18-140 attached to it or even my 85 along with my YN 685 speedlight attachesd as well all day, maybe occasionally setting it down, but I don’t find the weight that big of an issue, the size for me is perfect, I love the feel of it in my hands, which is why I have hesitated to move to full frame because of the extra weight and size not to mention the extra cost. I love my D7200 and with the prices what they are for them new, I am considering a 2nd one as a backup! The D7200 is an awesome camera!

IMHO you will definitely want to go to a camera store where you could handle them both, see what fits comfortably in your hands & how they function. I had a D3100 and it felt small in my hands, I upgraded to the D7200 and it fits like a glove. The P900 is probably a tad smaller than a D3100. I absolutely love my D7200, and I just added the A900 to my collection, much smaller than the P900, but I was looking for something that could be slipped into a pocket or my handbag. I now have the A900 with me all the time, as carrying my camera bag with camera and lenses was a bit much for back and forth to work, etc. There took a bit of time getting used to the small size of it, but now I can just grab it and shoot, sure the quality is not quite like my D7200 (still my favorite) but I am having fun with it. What I do like about the A900 is that by Bluetooth it automatically transfers the pictures I take to my iPhone, although at only 2mp, but my favorite shots can be done wirelessly using the cameras WiFi at 20mp. All in all I like having both, the D7200 is awesome and with a good assortment of lenses you can get some amazing shots, and the convenience of the A900 (which is smaller that the P900) just throwing it in!
So, if you don’t want the extra expense of lenses, go for the P900, looks like you would have everything but RAW. Happy camera hunting, and let us know what you finally decide on. New cameras are so much fun.
