Just looked at my Sibley's. The first bird is indeed a juvenile, and you got the color right: they are mostly brown. The adult is grey which is this capture. Wonderful captures, enjoyed them very much.

I had nothing but trouble with Catalina - dropped bluetooth devices, crashing like Windows 95, lots of memory leaks. Big Sur fixed all of that. I have one residual problem I need to call Apple about, but its a carryover from Catalina. This is the best OS Apple has made in years, IMHO.

How far away was the bird, and how much of the viewfinder was it filling up? You're going to have a VERY low keeper rate when they are far away, or little guys like warblers. As a troubleshooting tip, turn off the stabilization completely and see if that helps. Also, you are at an effective 960mm at full zoom. I wouldn't shoot at anything under 1/2500. At that speed, you will need to crank up the ISO, so keep checking the histogram.

For BIF, expect a low keeper rate for anything but large, slow flying birds that fill up a good percentage of your viewfinder.

Just my 2 cents.

I find the balance a bit awkward with my D7500; the CG of the lens is towards the front. What works for me is to get the shutter speed no less than 1/2500 at 500 mm and hold the lens with your hand way out towards the front. I use a blackrapid strap tied to the tripod mount.

Optically, this is an outstanding lens. You just need to find the technique that works for you.

Be aware, if you decide to discontinue they brick the printer function. This is not hypothetical - it happened to me. Being we let the original cartridges run dry before trying the instant ink ones, this was kind of a rip-off. As a consequence, we are done with HP and bought an Epson replacement. I've used lots of HP printers over the years, but behavior like this loses a customer for life.

What I would like to see is an exact recipe to convert RAW into Canon or Nikon etc. that precisely matches jpeg images directly from the camera. Make that your starting point and then adjust to personal preference.
Particularly when shooting portraits, I have a hard time getting a precise match, and usually find jpegs from camera to be better than my RAW conversions when exposure and WB are correct to start with. If someone can help me here I’d appreciate the guidance.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but if you want to start from the JPEG recipe, the native Canon and Nikon applications that came with the camera do just that, if you just process on the default settings. The advantage of going this way is you maintain the 16 bit processing a little further down the processing chain for more dynamic range, but the picture should look just like the jpeg in terms of contrast, saturation, etc..

I handhold that lens regularly, but it is indeed a beast. The settings that work best for me are 1/2000 ss and f8 in manual mode with auto-iso and VR enabled. I can't imagine holding it for a full day!

My problem is with scanning. I have an HP Officejet Pro 7740. I can print just fine from my Mac, but I can no longer scan from my Mac.

I was on the phone with HP on Monday as I was interested in one of their sale machines. While I’m currently on Mojave, I don’t want to buy anything not compatible with Catalina. After a the sales rep consulted with his tech folks, he indicated that the machine I was interested in was not compatible. I then asked what machines they had which were compatible. After another short absence, he came back and said none at the moment! This may not match folk’s real world experience, but I rely on my all-in-one and will not upgrade until I can see a path here.

Bought a 2017 27 inch a few months ago. It was a revelation: the Retina display is awesome. Kind of reminds me of a microwave oven - couldn’t figure out why I would want one now I can’t live without it. It has the 2TB fusion drive which I find more than adequate and avoids the hassle of external data drives. Runs LR & PS just fine, although at 16GB memory, it’s marginal- I need to add some more - nice thing about the 27 inch model.

No problems here. Had the lens for 1.5 years. Pictures are still tack sharp, but gosh it is heavy!

Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Flooded couple of city blocks with boardwalks. Haven't been there for several years, but used to be a great spot.

Download Google Photos. It will automatically grab the photos you shoot on the iPhone and you can just use the google photos website to manage them, and download them to your PC if you wish. No fuss, no actions on your part required. If you stay within the Google 15GB total, they will keep the picture "forever" (not quite sure what forever is in this context).
