My own experience with Watson batteries suggest they may be superior to other non-Nikon brands, but their price also reflects that (1/2 of a Nikon battery but about twice that of others). Curiously, I have not encountered the same problem with non-Nikon batteries in my other Nikons.

I use both Nikon and off brand (mainly B&H) batteries. I'll pay closer attention to what's in the camera when thjis problem arises. I have noted, though, that Nikon batteries seem to degrade more quickly as they age and thus need to be replaced in the camera more frequently. In terms of number of frames per battery, then, the distinction may not be that much; that is, the Nikon batteries reach near 0% about as quickly as the offbrand reach 30%. And, of course, the Nikons cost three times as much, meaning I can have three times as many back-up batteries on hand with the off-brands.

Camera controls (including shutter release) tend to freeze when batter charge goes below 30%. Anyone out there encounter a similar issue?

Go for it! I was 68 when I started with Lightroom and almost right away was able to use it to produce noticeably better photographs. It's quite intuitive (unlike Photoshop) and has been substantially improved over the past decade with AI features that make it even simpler to use. I'd recommend the Creative Cloud subscription since Adobe is continually upgrading LR (you will also get Photoshop if you want to try something much more challenging).

Unless you can nail the shot in the camera at least 20% of the time, you'll appreciate the ability to do sophisticated post-production processing in LR. Also recommend using RAW rather than JPEG-- it's a lot easier to correct mistakes with exposure or white balance if you do.

Great Alaskan Adventures' Bear Camp, on Cook Inlet. You can spend a night or more in tents at Bear Camp, which you reach from Kenai Peninsular via a plane that lands on the beach. We were there last week in June, as the Alaskan Grizzly sows and their cubs were emerging from winter "hibernation" and there were about 120 of them, all around. We were able to approach with 20-25 feet and some more foolhardy day tourists got even closer (see attached photos). Fortunately, the bears were mainly interested in clam digging and, just in case, our guide was armed with a .457 magnum revolver.

With repeated use my LRC gets increasingly sluggish and (very) slow to respond to even simple commands, such as "Reject Photo." Once I reboot my computer (by turning it off altogether and turning on again, using "Restart" doesn't work), LRC again works well for a few days, then the "slows" start again. Does anyone know of a quicker solution that shutting down the computer entirely?

Suddenly neither LR nor Windows can see my SD cards unless I restart computer after inserting card in the computers onboard reader. I have not changed cards or changed the operating system (Window 10) except for Microsoft updates. Anyone else encounter this issue (and resolve it)?

Great shot. It might be interesting to try an alternate version where the person standing in the middle of the view has been Photoshopped out.

Don't underestimate the value of stabilization. With good technique you can shoot at very slow shutter speeds. Here is an image taken with a 600mm lens on a full frame camera at 1/25 second.[/quote]

Wow! What camera and what lens?

Jdh - did you try fiddling with the highlights and shadows? You mentioned contrast, but bringing your highlights down and shadows up some might give it a little more definition. Also, you might want to try playing with the luminescence on aqua, blue and green channels and maybe even the yellow. Sometimes that will soften glares, but it will effect the look of your saturation as well. Just a thought. I think this shot could make for a great "painting" in one of the Topaz or other PP collections.

I have spent quite a bit of time fiddling with all those controls on Lightroom and the photo I posted represents my best efforts there. I just spent a few minutes trying out the "Oil Painting" filter in Photoshop but it seems quite limited. I also checked out the Topaz website and see that I can download their "print-to-paint" software for a free trial, so per your suggestion I'm going to try that too. Thanks.

It's a nice photo of a young lady checking out the lake...what's so haunting about it?

I find it haunting. You don't. Thanks for letting me know.

This is a haunting picture that I took in October 2015. I've created a number of version trying to get the contrast and definition right (I had to blow it up a bit and so the edges are a little softer than I want). Helpful critiques are welcome.
