My spouse and I intend to go to Florida in December-January. Last year we went to the East coast and it was awesome. Attached are a few pictures.
We would like -this time- to go to Fort Myers. It seems well located and with easy access to places like JN Darling NWR/Sanibel, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary etc.
We live in Washington DC and usually travel by plane, rent an apartment and a car and keep doing bird photography.
Your advice would be much appreciated. Also, do you think that the present algae problem would hinder our visit?

From the photos you included it appears you appreciate owls. In Ft. Myers you'll be just across the Caloosahatchee River from Cape Coral. That is a sprawling town with more Burrowing Owls than any other place in Florida. They are not particularly shy and for some reason their burrows tend to be near the roads, allowing great photos from your car, without spooking them. The burrows are mostly marked by PVC poles installed by the city and Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife so that the large grass mowers operated by the city do not run over and collapse the shallow burrows. There are literally thousands of burrows throughout the city. If you are so inclined, contact me and I will give you some specific areas of the city to look.

I most heartily agree that the Venice Rookery is an absolute must for your visit. You will need a long lens, I think 400mm would be a minimum. Many use 600mm with telextenders. There are fantastic opportunities for Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and several other species who nest and raise young on the island.

By the time you arrive the blue-green algae issue should be less of a problem with the cooler temperatures. Make no mistake, it is a tremendous ecological disaster with a lot of the blame to be laid at the feet of our legislature and our governor in gutting environmental protections for the last 8 years or so. I do not believe it will affect you by this winter.

I have one in mint condition that I find I seldom use. If you are interested I will take some photos of it. I am thinking of about $550 plus shipping. Let me know if you are interested.

Craig, we all regret not having our cameras with us at some time or another. We can't undo the past, but we can learn from it and do better in the future. You have had an amazing life. Speaking for myself, and I'm sure many others, I hope you write a book, either by yourself, or with the help of a friend or relative. I hate to think of your memories being lost to the world. Another option would be to make videos of you describing each of those experiences. They can then be posted on YouTube so we can all marvel at those adventures. If I can help you in any way with any of these ideas please let me know.

Very nice but all of your shots are taken over land or with land in sight - I thought the Navy was an ocean going operation! I do like the lighting on this one - it almost makes the SLUF look nice.

You are right! It is a sea going operation. I'm pretty sure the first one was at sea. I know the second one was a long way from any land.

Yes, indeed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As you know, the A-7 was a dream to fly and did what it was designed for extremely well. I thought you might enjoy this photo taken over the Colorado Rockies enroute from Buckley near Denver to Lemoore NAS, California.

Here is a photo I shot flying over one of the Hawaiian Islands in 1971. I don't recall the specific island any more.

Holy cow! That is a great camouflage scheme. Even knowing there are aircraft there it is almost impossible to see them.

Here is a photo I took a few years ago. All three of these chicks made it. The parents' skill and experience, weather, and luck all enter into the survival equation.

I like your selection of airplanes. Here is a photo I took in 1971 approaching Northern Luzon in the Philippines. These are Navy A-7E aircraft, virtually identical to the Air Force A-7D. I was in an identical A-7E with my trusty Konica C-35. Navy pilots always take pride in their formation flying and they did very well this day. By the way, the A-7E was a dream airplane, state-of-the-art at the time, and very easy to fly. On this day we had flown from the USS Enterprise enroute to Subic Bay Naval Air Station.

That is very good. Was the only light from the trailcam itself? Would you care to share with us the make and model?

Seems to be a common complaint. It has happened numerous times with my two trail cams.

YouTube provides a number of ways to access videos. There can be embedded links and other ways. I suggest you find the video in question by using a title search with the YouTube search box, or a subject search through YouTube. Once you have found it independent of your YouTube channel, try using that link. I believe that should solve the problem.

When I click on that link it takes me to my own YouTube videos, not yours. Not sure why that would be. Can you provide another link?
