M-Disk has been around since 2009. The disks have been costly but the price has been going down. A LG slim external recorder runs about $80. The disks come in 4.7($1.20), 25BDR($4.20) , 50BDR($7.50) & 100BDR ($14.00) GBs. (when bought in bulk). I use the 4.7 for video and the larger ones for bigger videos and RAW images. I am a historian and love the past. I find it satisfying to know these images will be available for hundreds of years in the future. I have faith in technology and believe in the far future, there always will be a way to view these disks. Some people believe the future ends at their death, I don’t.

Mark,
With 10000 slides I would recommend a Pacific Image PowerSlide 5000 CCD Slides Scanner, it can do 50 slides at a time. I have one and have scanned over 10000 slides a bit of a learning curve but excellent results. Would recommend reading all reviews and shopping around, the price varies. Also recommend getting several slide trays. Also VueScan software.

Curving does seem to affect my scans, but cupping does example.... ) .... is there a solution for the cupping?

You choice of lenses is good, would recommend 2 things. Upgrade to a full frame camera, there are some great deals on the 6D mark I. Also a long lens… 300mm + . Italy has many narrow streets which require extreme wide angles and some great photo opportunities at a distance. A monopod is useful also. When I travel I also carry my SX60 for those quick snap shots and easy videos.
I don’t know how long you will be in Italy. Whenever I go I always try to extend. A few years back when I was 55, I extended a month in Europe, brought my folding 24” bicycle, a Euro rail pass and spent the nights at youth Hostels. My back pack was filled with Camera Equipment; I bought necessities as needed on the way. Make it an adventure and have fun!

Would recommend 128GB cards. I have traveled to 86 countries with a backpack full of camera equipment. I have never had any problems anywhere. As a side note did Macho Picchu in 1978. Had an 8mm video camera with a Canon A1... things were different back then...

I own a Pacific Image Prime Film XA Slide & Negative Scanner coupled VUESCAN software. Below is a recent review I wrote on the Prime Film scanner I use it for negatives only. I am amazed at the results Very close to par with the original prints (poster sized) I made 18 years ago. For slides I use the Pacific Image Power Slide 5000 with mixed near comparable results (varied with condition of the slide). I bought from B&H

I have just finished scanning 1300 (18 years old) 35mm color negatives and thought I’d share some lessons learned. I am using VUESCAN software. The results are excellent. I am using 10000dpi with 3 scans per image. The image size is approx. 90MB for jpg and 100MB for RAW. I scan 4 images at a time which takes about one hour. This size image can be viewed on higher end SONY 4K TVS. They must be reduced to view on Samsung 4K TVs. I have several strips of 3 and several strips of two images. Strips of three work fine, but the scanner won’t feed the strips of two. There was a mention the scanner scratches film. If the film is cupped (not flat) if doesn’t feed properly and appears to scratch the film. The software does a great job of repairing these scratches. I have it set at medium dust removal. The age of the film also shows some film flaking which the software does a great job of hiding. It’s worth mentioning I am using an i7 Intel chip on a PC with 24 GB RAM and a Quadro Pro 5000 color card. Over all I’m amazed how well the image comes out. Hope this review helps.

I have the P900 and the Canon SX60. Both megazooms. The SX60 has a 65x zoom vs the 83x zoom on the Nikon. The canon has a 24mm wide angle vs 24 MM on the NIKON. The canon does RAW. The Canon is smaller and lighter. I prefer the Canon and use is as a secondary camera when I travel, I use it for times I need a large zoom and to take videos.(1080P) The Canon is cheaper than Nikon and is heavily discounted on line.

Hello,
I have been building computers since the 80's. All the recommendations are great. Bottom line Best processer you can afford (i7 quad Core) max RAM your board will support. The most important update is your graphics/Video card, don't get in the trap of getting a high end gaming card, get a card designed for video editing. I use the Nvidia Quadro 5000. It's and old video card from 2011 which sold for $2000+ then, which now can be had less then $300 new. It does a fantastic job and is very fast. Remember video processing is done mostly in your graphics card. If your budget will support I would recommend a 4K monitor. Good luck with your build.

Don't know about Nikon but have been very happy with Canon. Had several repairs on camera body and lenses , charge was $100, if the were unable to repair they exchanged for a refurbished item at approx. $100.

I have used Canon Repair at both East and West Coast Repair Centers. The price is reasonable and if they cant repair they usually will replace with a similar item. I have had them repair both lenses and camera bodies.

I suppose the question is whether your looking to take pictures for publication or good quality snapshots to share with friends and family. I have traveled Central America frequently and find humidity is the worst enemy. The 7d is weather proofed but your choice of lenses is not. You will be needing a L lenses (renting one is a good option). The longer the Lenses the better. The recommendation of a travel vest is a good idea. Get the lightest one the uses a breathable netted material. When I travel I carry a 5D with a wide angle zoom and a Long zoom L lens. This is a heavy combination, but does produce professional quality pictures. The problem when traveling with groups you don't always have time to set up the shot to include fiddling with camera and lenses. Because of this, I carry a backup megazoom Powershot SX60. With this camera I have taken shots I would have missed with my 5D. Plus the SX60 allows me to take movies. I consider the SX60 as sacrificial (I already lost one in a rainstorm in Belize). But Canon repaired for $99. Have fun on your adventure.

I find many of the replies interesting. I'm an old 35mm guy back in the day sharpness was the determining factor. I found the best candidates were those that were very busy with lots of subject matter. I have some pics taken from Heidelberg Castle looking down of the river surrounded by the densely packed town below. As a 4x7 pics the results were so so, when blown up to poster size the results were excellent. With digital, pixels need to be taken into the equation. My solution is a 32 inch 4 k monitor. You get a good idea what a blow up looks like. Bottom line the more info ( in the picture) the better the blow up will be.
