My father was a police officer for over 35 years and my two brothers and I grew up with easy access to loaded guns in the house as did most of the children of other police officers I grew up with. We were taught at very early ages on the proper handling of guns and taught how to fire them by age 5 before entering kindergarten. I was on my high school shooting team and hunted to put meat on the table due to cancer in the family when I was 14 years old and am a Vietnam era Marine so I have a natural respect for the tool that they are and less fear in their ownership and handling than many people. I also understand and share your concern for irresponsible people.
The supreme court has struct down laws that require gun owners to keep their guns unloaded and locked away because it defeats their use for self defense so having a loaded gun with easy access is not a problem for me. Having a loaded gun with easy access but not having control over it does.
I too keep my guns unloaded with trigger locks but then I do not live in a high crime area nor have an occupation that would require it. For those people living in high crime areas need to keep their arms handy but out of reach of young children or irrational people, young or old.
Their will always be people that misuse and are irresponsible with everything from matches and tools to weapons. It is tragic any time a child is harmed but you can't regulate stupidity only punish those that harm others and act irresponsibly. Fire arm safety should be required in grade school and more help given to the mentally ill, not restrict law abiding people the ability to defend themselves.
It is no longer debatable, every study has shown strict gun control results in higher crime. If you want to save the most lives, ban cars, bad doctors, knives and hammers all of which kill and injure more people than guns.
Anyone that does not like the American gun culture should spend some time south of the US border and experience the security that comes with strict gun control. Of course you do not have to go south of the border to experience it, as any big city in the U.S. with strict gun control will do. Chicago has the toughest gun control laws in the country and they also have the highest murder rate in the U.S.
I also believe that if you keep a loaded gun in the house or conceal carry, you should practice with them at least once every month. Gun clubs are good for this and keep guns, loaded or not, secure from untrained hands.

If you want to shoot something not for food, in defense, or made of paper, please use a camera. ;)

The best place to mount a camera for shock and vibration control is on the helmet with a remote button mounted to your left index finger in such a way that you can press it with your thumb without taking your hand off the handle bars.
another option is to use a camera that can be programmed to take a shot every so often depending on the cameras storage capacity and trip length.

The 1st option gives you better control of the shot and conserves memory. The second will give you better control of the bike and a more enjoyable ride.

You can use double sided carpet tap and hook and loop strips to mount the camera to your helmet. Don't rely on the sticky tape that comes with the hook & loop as it is not strong enough to hold the camera for long and multiple rides.
It is also a good idea to connect a short strap to the camera and helmet to keep the camera from falling should the tape fail.
you may also need to make a small mount, flat on one side and curved to match the helmet on the other. Your local lumber yard will a have tool used by floor covering professionals to custom shape pieces to fit around moldings and other objects as needed. It is about 6 inches long and made of many needles held in a bar. you press the pins against the object, in this case the helmet, then use the tools edge of the curvature to mark the wood or hard foam so you can give it the correct curve.

You can mount the camera any place on the bike except on parts that move with the wheels like fenders, break mounts, lower forks and swing arm.

Good Luck, Happy Shooting, and Enjoy the Ride.

Thanks Gitzo.

Your are correct that you can't argue with crazy people.

Ditto that for emotional arguments, and fanatics.

While I don't always succeed, I try never to argue but do enjoy debating issues with informed people and people with different view points as long as they stay focused on topic and can avoid hostilities and emotional arguments as much as possible.

I found this sight because I like photography and am starting a college class on Digital-Photography and want to couple others hard learned lessons and experiences with what I will be learning in class. This thread touched one of my hot buttons and had to put in my two cents, well maybe a buck-fifty.

Again Thanks for the kind remarks.

EYES WIDE SHUT

The problem with the anti-gun people is they view the world with their eyes wide shut.

It does not matter to them that the cities with the strictest gun control laws also have the highest crime rates.

It does no good to show them that the cities with the freest gun laws are also the cities with the lowest crime.

You can point out that more people are murdered in gun free zones than in gun friendly areas.

In all these cases the Anti-Gun crowd with eyes wide shut, cherry pick data, excluding true crime and murder rates for only those involving guns.

You can point to Mexico where guns are next to impossible for a law abiding citizen to get but the drug cartels have them in abundance, murdering 10 people a week on average.

You can point out all the atrocities done throughout history, of oppression, enslavement, and genocide due to the inability of the law-abiding people to defend themselves.

None of it makes it past those eyes wide shut.

With eyes wide shut they ignore the evidence, believing that the only thing needed to make bad people good, is to tell them no, no, no, you should not do that. See the nice people, you need to be more like them.

The bad people in response say… Thank you people with eyes wide shut for making it easier for the bad to assault, rob, steal, rape and do whatever to those good people.
Now the cruelest, most ruthless, and sadistic of the bad will impose their well on the good because of the ones with eyes wide shut. Ho you people with eyes wide shut you have done such a good job disarming all the good people, now the bad will beat you, take all your belongings, and work you for free to prosper the wicked.

Of course the people with eyes wide shut will puff up their chests and boast, “I am smarter and more intelligent because I have all these degrees that prove I am. Therefore, I know what is best for you and your arguments are thus invalid.”

What they don’t understand is that intellect is not a measure of the information amassed.

Intellect is the measure of ones ability to learn and REASON.

People with good intellect have a capacity for knowledge and UNDERSTANDING.
The ability to THINK in the abstract and develop profound thoughts and insights into the knowledge they acquire.

Ignoring the real world in favor of a perceived utopia with all the knowledge in the world is not intellect it is ignorance.

So to all who travel through life with your eyes wide shut – OPEN THEM to the world and see it in all its glory and gore.

Understand that not everyone is the same and stop trying to punish and hand tie the good people that don’t think like you do.

We are a nation of free people.

We should be able to do anything we want, go anywhere we want, when ever we want, with whatever we want and enjoy life to its fullest without fear of crime and aggression, AS LONG AS it does not infringe on the freedom of others.

WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES should be free to have life, liberty and pursue happiness as each individual sees fit.

When it does infringe on another’s right, it is a CRIME and should be punished, for which we have police and the court system to bring justice.

The police are not capable of protecting everyone, everywhere, at all times.
It is up to each individual to supply that protection until help arrives.

Determining the level, type and quality of that protection is again up to the individual and must be balanced with the cost to maintain that protection.

It is said, “God created man but it took Colt to make them equal.”

Those of high intellect understand that statement, those with a low Intellect and eyes wide shut never will.

The world is full of wondrous things but it is also full of dangers.
Bad people are one of those dangers.

A full grown man in the prime of his life cannot, unarmed, defend his family from a mob of bad people, but an 8 year old girl trained on how to use an AR-15 can.

Good people do not commit crimes, let alone purposely shoot other good people, bad people do.

Good people could own anything from a BB gun to a Nuclear Missile and never intentionally cause harm to other good people.
The same cannot be said of the bad and wicked people.

Restricting good people the tools to defend themselves from bad people is not only wrong it is unconscionable.

Does that mean good people should have a nuke in their house?
Of course not, good people put that in the hands of good government elected by good people to protect them from bad people with the same.

“Well, WELL, WELL, huff, huff, huff, what about a Machine Gun, Tank or Jet Fighter then. Nah, Nah, Nah!” Say the people with eyes wide shut.

Well yes, as a mater of fact. Good people in our country can own those things, right now, but they are very expensive and not much good in defending your house from some criminal at 2 o’clock in the morning.
I can see it now… the owner telling the crook to wait while he fires up his jet – EPIC-FAIL.
But reaching for an AR-15, next to the bed with one hand and pulling a loaded magazine with appropriate ammo, out of the drawer with the other and in a split second having it locked, loaded and ready to defend the house and family works pretty well.

Of course a trained gun owner knows not to put his finger on the trigger let alone pull the trigger until 6 criteria are met…
1. ID’s the target (preferably from cover)
2. Confirm it is a target (don’t want to shoot the kids or spouse by mistake)
3. Has target in sights (Not some sound on the other side of the door)
4. Verifies target is hostel, i.e. is an imminent treat and non-compliant. (Is charging, posing a direct threat, is not obeying instructions to halt and continues to advance, and is not already fleeing, i.e. has been told to halt but is running away, be sure to Remember the Hostel part)
5. Is mindful of surroundings (Don’t want the bullet going through the kids or neighbors bedroom wall)
6. Double checks the above
7. Fire a warning shoot into the floor or ceiling just in front of the intruder. (If safe and you have the time that is. You know “safe”, that kids and neighbor thing again. If not safe the warning shoot could be at intruders arm or leg.) otherwise…
8. Aim mid chest to neck put finger on the trigger and squeeze. (Of course you can also aim to wound if you’re not willing to take a life in defense of your own and families. This is not a light decision and needs to be made before deciding to set up a firearm for immediate home defense. Hesitating in the moment is not an option.)

Here is another thing good gun people do.
They don’t pull a gun on someone unless…
1. There is a clear and present danger of death or extreme bodily harm.
2. Lesser force would be ineffective
3. They are ready and willing to shoot.
A good gun person does not pull a gun on someone otherwise.
Bad people go straight to number 3 with no regard to 1 & 2.

Well I’m sure this has just been speaking to the choir but even if one person with eyes wide shut is challenged enough to make their eyes wide open it is a good thing.

Thanks for reading. :-)

Gay Marriage:
1. Gays should have the same protections, advantages and disadvantages of marriage as straight couples.
2. I fail to see how any two people getting married can negatively affect the general course of life on this planet. Gays left alone do not breed but they can raise children in their care
and any child with two parents that care for them are better off than a child with only one or no parent.
3. Churches should not be forced to change their teachings or practices to conform to secular laws and mandates as it is contrary to the 1st amendment of the U.S. constitution regarding freedom of religion. Change must come from within the church not from forces outside the church.

Gun Control:
1. Fact:
Everywhere Gun Control has be tightened violent crime has gone up.
Everywhere Gun Controls have been repealed and concealed carry implemented all forms of crime have went down.
2. Any law that restricts law abiding citizens from obtaining arms equal to those arms used by common military and law enforcement personnel is an infringement and counter to the 2nd amendment.
3. The Supreme Court has ruled over and over again, that the type of weapons protected by the 2nd amendment are “ordinary military equipment” “in common use by the military” that “could contribute to the common defense”
4. Most gun control laws penalize law abiding citizens and do little to nothing to deter criminals from obtaining and using guns. Its like trying to stop drunk driving by outlawing cars.
5. Weapons, like “(bazookas, grenades, RPGs, etc…)”, are not “ordinary military equipment” “in common use by the military” that “could contribute to the common defense” they are special use weapons issued only to troops that are engaging an enemy in a combat zone and are under very strict control. Tanks and Jet Fighters, are equipment used by a very few specialized servicemen. Unlike the M16/A4, which are issued to all troops at one time or another.
6. Law abiding citizens do not buy guns to go out and shoot people. Guns are bought to put food on the table called Hunting, to protect their families and property called Security, and for enjoyment called Sport.

Lastly: If you don't like guns don't buy one and if you don't like gay marriage don't attend one. In the mean time, keep your nose out of other peoples business.
