I would like to reduce the storage used by my photos (Lightroom user). Please stay with me here ..
- I have a large number of images Raw and tiff at 20+ megapixels
- my photos are rated 1-5 (4 & 5 being 'keepers')
- upon sorting I find I have many 1, 2, 3 that are casual, memories etc that I have no intent to print and just being stored for all times sake as a memory for the family (that they will probably never view - lol) These also are at 20+ mega pixels and will more than likely (sometime) export them as Jpegs so others can view without converting
- I want to maintain 'most' of their detail initially as a tif but at a reduced storage size

Questions:
1. what is the best way to resize and maintain them as tif ... yes I can simply export the tif as tif and either set long edge say to 2048 or I could just set a % resize. Since 90% have been post-processed incl. cropped ... ** does either export maintain the same aspect ratio the exist today
2. since they are all in folders over he years ... ** is there any way to bulk export and have them 'automatically' be exported to their original folder? If not I will export them to a separate folder = resized and then sort by keywords and drag them to their respective original folder
?? a thought ... when I 'edit in' Photoshop and Command Save the edited photos retruns to the source folder in Lightroom. ** will that work in bulk for resizing in PS and when saving they all get returned to their source folder in Lr

I installed/updated PS (beta) to version 25.0 and had the same edit in issue.
Adobe support shared that I had to delete PS using their removal app on Adobe and then install the previous version 24.XX.

I suggested they remote in and do it since I could not find a previous version. They remoted in and spent and hour 'fixing' Lr to PS ... and stated "this is a known issue and I should use the old version until an update is issued.

Works fine now

Yes - The gentleman was trying to first understand Collections - I didn't want to immediately jump to smart collections or collection sets right away. But that is the best way to go. I use them also to find photos without a) keywords or b) ratings as I clean up my catalog

Let me retitle the topic to Folders *and* Collections
I use both ... and Collections has a big benefit to me for organizing. So ..

1. are you comfortable with a file structure - whether it's by date, location, person, subject ... fine - keep it
2. do you have a need to keep the same photo in a different 'folder or gallery' - collections to the rescue
3. are collections valuable - you bet, as others said, one photo can be in dozens of collections/galleries (virtually) and you don't have to duplicate that photo for those different collections
4. it's akin to 500px ... I have ~300 individual photos in 'My Photos' in 500px ... but I can place then in several galleries without duplicating the photo ... just like collections
5. (real use) my Library in Lightroom is structured alphabetically by location (I am not date centric). However, some locations have common 'themes' such as historic train depots, lighthouses, sunrise/sunset, city scapes, etc.

So one example is I can create a Collection named 'Train Depots' and drag any and all photos of train depots into that collection without having to duplicate the image ... hope that helps. (Now there is more to Collections and worth exploring like Smart Collections ... but that's another step).

Click the green button and go full screen.

I saw it, didn't even 'think' to open full screen since Lr was what it looked like - full screen.
Mac 101 ... thanks

Backup is not the original topic so I won't dwell on it beyond saying that it should be universal and automated. Backup should be done continuously. Not just when you think about it. It should be done even when you are distracted by something 'more important'.

Thanks, I was not clear #1, #2, #3 referred to the catalog and #4 was in reference to the catalog file also.
We should all use the 3-2-1 backup https://www.backblaze.com/blog/the-3-2-1-backup-strategy/

My previous post about Lightroom Classic 12.3 issue on Adobe's end resulted in Adobe support turning on Rosetta/Emulation Mode.

I am not familiar with this but appears it has to do with supporting Lightroom's operation efficiency/speed. Can any share their understanding.

As a result I have a header displayed on the Lightroom page like this ... can it be hidden?

Yesterday spent 3+ hours with Adobe after Lightroom Classic (version 12.3) failed to open. I Contacted Adobe chat and the 1st support rep spent 2+ hours troubleshooting - changing preferences, installing 12.3, reinstalling 12.1 and 12.2, inadvertently loading an old catalog - etc. Then we disconnected.

I contacted support again - this time I connected with a knowledgeable support rep. and was able to locate my current catalog who's location was changed by rep #1. Conclusion: He resolved with a work around having to do with access error (sorry that's all I heard). A new version 12.4 coming out shortly

'My' Lessons:
1. maintain you active catalog under User>Pictures>Lightroom
2. name that catalog such that you will recall it - I used a name and date
3. confirm you are backing up at least daily to a location different than where you primary catalog resides
4. consider a spare backup on an external drive monthly

I appreciate the advice for everyone. It offers approaches and ideas I will explore to move forward.
I already do several things that CHG_CANON, DirtFarmer and others suggest.
1. All post-processing use the the original RAW file
2. Any photos to share either on websites are exported as JPEG's at 2080
3. Photos for my Digital Time Capsule are all exported as JPEG at 2048 (as noted - it's useless to share tiff)

Thanks all .. Bob

CHG_CANON ... responses below after **

1, Why TIFF? ... ** just that it's a lossless format - should I want to re-edit in the future
2, What purpose / problem does this file especially the TIFF format resolve? ... ** I may not have been clear but I was looking for helpful support relative to how one can save images at a lower file size, still with reasonable detail and have the flexibility re-edit in the future versus exporting to Jpeg
3, You mention printing, what printer have you used that accepted a TIFF as input? I don't print and are unaware of Tiff printers supporting TIFF. With your knowledge of photography and equipment you would better than most UHH members (and me for one) to answer that question (or was that just a joke?)
4, For your question of resizing your 'lessor' rated images, why are you exporting them at all? Will they be shared / used in a digital frame? Other?. ** Many of those 'lesser' photos are memories of family, friends and travels that will be part of a digital time capsule (website) I created. To leave our family stories and photos how we enjoyed life.
5, For your question about your 'lessor' rated images, why are you keeping them at all? ** See #4
6, If maintaining an export file is relevant, based on your answers to questions above, why not a 'full resolution' JPEG? ... ** I assumed, maybe incorrectly, that if saved in JPEG format and modifications made later I will lose detail each time. Also, as software and AI improve, I have already used opportunities to enhance those images (i.e. sky replacement, PS beta removal tool, Lr Masking)
7, Have you reviewed this post? Recommended resizing parameters for digital images ** No - thank you I always try to read your responses and 'pearls of wisdom'. The knowledge you bring is an asset to UHH!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and questions.

I know hard drive space (or external drive) ...

Just returned from shooting Dry Tortuga - Ft Jefferson with Sony A6500 (24 MP) and iPhone (48 MP)
Conveniently, the mobile phone became the camera of choice for general 'vacation' shots and the Sony for other photos. However, when I imported the images into Lightroom ... 300+ phone photos takes up a lot of space!

Question ... thoughts
1. for the 'pro' shots (4 & 5 stars) from phone or Sony - I will keep the full Raw
2. for all others, I would like to know how best to resize (and I resize AFTER post processing the RAW)

I tested an export of several images from Lightroom to a new folder where I a) select TIFF as file type and percentage = 50% ... Does this make sense ... with a followup question.

Question ... what TIFF pixel dimensions is appropriate, considering I never print photos (but if pushed I probably would not print anything bigger than 16x20).

Any thoughts or criticism is welcome.

Bob
