They look pretty good! I took some tonight too in preparation of taking a moon rising workshop in NJ overlooking the Statue of Liberty. I read somewhere that shooting the moon is similar to shooting the sun and to use the Sunny 16 rule which is aperture f16, iso 100, shutter 1/125. And if you go up in iso then follow with shutter (ex: iso 200/shutter 1/200, iso 400/shutter 1/400. I tried it tonight and it worked perfectly on the first shot. :)

Thanks for the great information! I'll have to try it out next time :) When do you plan on posting your NJ shots?

The start of the night, there was this really cool eerie orange haze and clouds around the moon. I started snapping away and they turned out awful. The kind where you just send the pictures straight to the trash. After putting the kids to sleep, the night turned clear and long and behold the moon was in full display. Setup shop and took some pictures and played around with different settings. After about 50 pictures decided to see what I had accomplished.

Good shots, is this the Columbus zoo?

Thanks Photophile. Yes this was at the Columbus zoo, next time I go I need to stop by the bird exhibit over in Asia quest

We are members but the kids love the reptile house and fish aquarium so we tend to go there a lot.

Took a trip with the kids to the zoo and we got to hang out in the bird exhibit. I really like how the first picture turned out. The background sort of gives it a nice contrast.

Nice pose the feeder in in focus, but the HB is not.

Try to focus on the birds eye or head next time.

I know i tried shooting these guys with auto focal points on the camera and was having no luck. I changed it to single point focus and by the time i got focus he would move just ever so slightly. I was aiming for the head believe it or not LOL. The higher ISO shots still didn't really help me well and the images were not as crisp as I wanted. Tricky little birds! Maybe I need some more practice with moving targets with my camera.

I've never had the opportunity to take pictures of hummingbirds. On my visit to my mother-n-law's house in NC they had a feeder. Let me just say to all those photographers who take pictures of these little speedsters that it is a lot harder than I thought. I had to change a lot of my settings, and focal points on my camera. After many shots I have a few that I think turned out nice. I think this is my best one, but I'm still going though my shots!

I got lucky and had 5 photos place in the ND water magazine photo contest. Each photo has to be taken in ND and have in some form of water in it.

Plessner,

First off let me be one of many to congratulate you on your achievement!

Secondly, the cover shot you took is just beautiful. As I do enjoy all your pictures that was selected, i found myself staring at the first 2 pictures. What a creative eye you had and helped displaying mother natures art. We do sometimes take our vantage point for granted! Thanks for sharing.

SO i'm using the 55-300 lens this week. Friday i go on a nice day hike with some friends, so i can really see if this is something I would end up using a lot. This past weekend I did find myself swapping out lenses (18-55mm & 55-300mm). I did look at the 18-300mm and that's so far out of my price range it hurt to just look :)

DXOMark rates the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses about equal in overall performance and sharpness so other than focal length the 55-300mm should be about as "good" as your 18-55mm.

Houdel,

I'm using the 55-300 lens now and I agree with that.
