I don't know what cameras you use. Today's Nikons (probably most brands) sense when they are on a tripods and act accordingly.

I am still using really old school technology. I haven't updated my cameras in at least 10 years. They still work and do what I want them to do (except when I put VR "on" and take photos on a tripod).

My Nikon lenses only have two VR positions, on and off. I try to keep my VR off because I invariably forget to turn it off after I use it. A few years ago I was out photographing waterfalls on a beautiful autumn afternoon. I got home and all of my photos were useless because I had the VR on while using my tripod. I tried to console myself with the fact that I was out on a beautiful fall day, but it was a very hollow consolation.

I agree with much of what was previously expressed. If you do not intend to post process then shoot in JPEG. I shoot RAW because I do post process and I can get much more detail out of my RAW file than I get out of JPEG straight out of camera (texture in a woman's hair, as an example).

How far east are you planning on traveling on this trip? If you are up to it, I'd take Route 5 or 5S east along the Mohawk River and the old Erie Canal. I would visit the Stockade area of Schenectady; it's the oldest part of the city from colonial and revolutionary times. It's not a big area and you can walk around it in a couple of hours. I would then take either US 9 or US 4 north into the Adirondacks. US 4 takes you near the Saratoga Battle Field; there are a lot of small towns along the routes (and if you're familiar with James Fenimore Cooper) you'll recognize some of the names from his books).

I had a variation of it on Facebook. I was direct messaged that someone would like to use one of my photos on Facebook; they were willing to pay me for it and I would have to send them my banking information so that they could deposit the money. I told them that they could use the photo for free; they told me that they could not do that and please send my banking information. I stopped communications at that point.

I use a flash for outdoor portraits. I always expose for the ambient light I wish to achieve and then adjust the flash to adequately light the subject. My starting point is normally f/5.6 @ 1/125 or 1/200. I will adjust the aperture as needed. When I get the ambient light set I then work on the flash, usually starting off with 1/2 power and adjust the flash as needed.

I once thought gear is irrelevant until I took a small Vivitar pocket camera on a bike ride; the sensor size, the inability to zoom (without using my feet), and other things convinced me to put the Vivitar away and only take my DSLR with me on bike rides. Gear is relevant, but knowing how to use that gear properly is important.

I have two Nikons from the D3000 family. I am always amazed when I meet a photographer who tells me that my gear is "holding me back." I cut my teeth on film and learned all about exposure. Using the proper gear (like a tripod and filters), I am never held back in any photographic situation. I know what I'm doing and take the photographs I want.

I was photographically "ruined" when I took two road trips from Connecticut to California. I stayed off of the interstates as much as possible. The landscapes out west put the landscapes of Connecticut to shame--or so I thought. I bought a Connecticut road atlas and I take trips on roads I have never been on (and would probably never be on, if not for photography). I am surprised at the photo opportunities I've missed! I want to take an off the beaten path road trip at least once a week. Unfortunately, the weather hasn't cooperated. I beat the photography blues by taking my gear and going out and finding something I've never seen before.

I shoot in RAW so I have to post process. There are photos I have "changed". One of my favorite photos is of the redwood cutters "dorm" (it was actually a shack) at the entrance to the University of California Santa Cruz. I took the shot in the morning; this section of coastal California has a habit of having white skies in the morning; somewhere in the later morning the upper atmosphere fog burns off and all you have it blue sky (no clouds). I took the photo of the white, nondescript sky. I knew I would change out the sky for one with brooding, dark clouds. Do I let people know I changed out the sky? Only if they ask. People are impressed with the photo and it turned out how I envisioned it.

Way back when I processed my own black and white film. There were plenty of times I dodged and burned in the darkroom. Did I tell people about it? No. It was part of what I did as a photographer.

A few years ago I spent more money than I had to buy a camera with a bunch of bells and whistles, most of which I don't use BUT I USE THE AUTO FOCUS FUNCTION. Sure I miss a few shots when AF screws up but nowhere close to what I missed using manual focus.

i have no line bi-focals and only use auto focus (it's either that or shoot at f/22 all the time).

I use aperture priority mode when shooting waterfalls while using a variable ND filter. I will set the aperture at either f/16 or 22, find focus, and then darken the filter to the desired level of darkness. I will look at the lcd screen and determine whether or not I need to tweak the settings, but aperture priority in this situation is almost a necessity.

Your property and surrounding environment can handle "x" amount of skunks (and other wildlife). If you successfully trap all of the skunks and have them moved elsewhere, different skunks will move in the whole thing starts all over again.
