So sad. Fortunately I was able to have my children and grandchildren enjoy the chalet with me several times. I hope they rebuild. I was in Glacier Park yesterday but it was so smoky on the going to the sun highway from the fire that burned the Chalet I drove around the park on Highway 2 to get to my destination.

Duane,
Glad to hear you secured reservations. Since you are going to be in the park for a number of days I will add to my previous comment. An overlooked area of the park by those just passing through is the west side easily accessed from Apgar.
Take the Camas road to the north fork road which takes you to Polebridge where you will only find a general store with a great bakery and a few cabins. The North fork road can be rough. Driving time is 45 min to an hour.
From Polebridge you venture on to Bowman Lake about 6 miles on a one way road. Bowman is a scenic mountain lake. From Polebridge you also Access Kintla Lake which is 15 miles and also a mountain lake and is an area I have camped several times. You will not be alone in these areas as in summer at least a 100 cars per day make the trip. From Polebridge there is what is called the inside road back to Apgar which may or may not be open. If it is open check the road condition because it can be very rough.
Near Apgar there is a visitors center so you will be able to get all the information you want in planning your park visit itinerary. I only wanted to give you a heads up on this overlooked area of the park. I will look forward to any photos you post.

I am going to Glacier in the middle of June. I know snow may present problems, and the pass on the Sun Hwy may still be snow covered.
My question is, if the pass is closed can you still drive on most of the road to see and photograph the rest of the scenery? Or is the entire road closed?
Appreciate all responses.
Thanks

Duane

Duane,
Yes; in mid June you should be able to see most of the scenery and take memorable pictures. Opening the road from one end to the other depends on how much snow falls in April and May and the number of avalanches the plows experience during plowing. The last to get plowed is "Big Drift" East of the visitor center at the top of Logan pass. It averages 85 ft in height.
If the road is not completely open what you can do is go into the west entrance. About a mile into the park is Apgar where you stop for a great photo of Lake MacDonald ; then proceed along the Lake on the going to the sun hwy and be sure to stop at Avalanche where you take the walk of the cedars to Avalanche gorge for a great photo op, also take the trail to Avalanche lake where you can walk along the stream for nice scenery. From Avalanche you will probably be able to drive another 20miles. If the road is closed you return to the West entrance and continue go east on hwy 2 to East glacier and make your way toward St Marys. On your way detour into Two Medicine lake for more photos. At St Marys you will be able to take the going to the sun along St. Mary's lake to the point of closure (if closed). From St Mary's you can drive to Many Glacier (40 min) which os one of my favorite areas of the park.
Take time to visit the old hotels at Lake MacDonald, East Glacier and Many Glacier.
As others suggest the website has good information about the park and road status.

I will be up in Glacier in August 2014. There is certainly alot of material on where to go but I would be interested in any tip from the hogger's group. Perhaps mention a favorite spot or activity, Anything would be appreciated. - Thanks!!!

All previous suggestions are good ones. I will be there a couple of times in August also and would add the following to what has been posted
Entering the west entrance stop at the information center a mile of so down the road to get any questions answered. From there detour to Apgar (1/2 mile)which is at the foot of Lake MacDonald for a good photo op of lake and mountains. Heading along the Going to the Sun Road 10 or so miles past the end of lake Mac Donald stop at Avalanche campground and take the trail of the cedars about 1/3 of a mile to Avalanche creek gorge for another photo op..If time permits take the trail to avalanche lake for about 200 yards to the area above the gorge.
Further along the sun road you will come to the visitors center at logan pass. From here you can take the trail to Hidden Lake overlook mentioned in one of the previous posts.Another scenic trail from the center is the Highline trail to Haystack and back but is an all day event.
From the visitors center you will head toward St Marys driving along St Marys lake. About 2/3rds along the lake stop at the Wild Goose Island scenic overlook. This is a small island in the lake and the scene is reportedly the most photographed scene in the park.
From St Marys you should head for Many Gacier,/Swiftcurrent about 15 miles. This is one of my favorite places in the park unless I am in the backcountry at the chalets. From here are the trailheads to Iceberg Lake,Grinnell Glacier , Cracker Lake and Swiftcurrent Pass. If you are in the Swiftcurrent campground area it is wothwhile to walk the 1/3rd mile to Fisher Cap lake for a chance to photograph a moose.
Enjoy!

If you are talking about the forum digest that is emailed everyday, it does not include every new post.
I look at the "newest Posts" at the top of this page and found it there and in the Photo Gallery.

Pat,
Thanks for the quick reply and looking at the shots. I did not realize the forum did not include all posts. Also had noted your 1st response soon after my upload.

Glad to help with your education. Question where did you see this set of photos. I posted in the photo gallery but do not find them in the 3/17 photo blog and yet have 3 replays. Thanks

Skijoring takes place as part of a Winter Carnival in a NW MT town and has the largest prize pool($20,000) on the Skijoring race circuit.
A skier is pulled by a horse around a horseshoe-shaped track where the skier has 3 jumps and navigates slalom gates between the jumps. I thought these photos might be of interest. Photos taken with a Canon 7D and 70-200mm f4.0 L lens on this cloudy cold day.

Hi and welcome from NW MT. I usually make a trip to Hamilton in April for a golf tourney but from the amount of snow it may not happen in April.

Hi Big Sky,
Love your photos!!! I'm headed out your way and wondered if you could share a few spots to get some landscape photos. We don't have anything like this in Mississippi.
Thanks,
Sam King

Hi Sam,
I just saw your message but I would respond. The park presents many photo opportunities. Most people enter through west glacier and drive the going to the sun highway, one of the most scenic drives in America. The first stop would be Apgar or you can take photos of lake McDonald. From here continue your drive up to the top of Logan pass to the visitor center. If you have time take the 1.5 mile hike to the Hidden Lake Overlook. Very scenic and you may have opportunity for close-ups of Mountain goats and mountain sheep. I just took some visitors up there last week. The road and continues down along St. Mary's Lake and it's wild goose Island which is the most photographed scene in the park I read somewhere. From St. Mary's take the 20 mile drive to Many Glacier which is my favorite part of the park. This is where the photos I posted were taken. Here is a link to park information in case you have not seen it. http://www.nps.gov/glac/index.htm.
Any event you plan on staying inside the park advance reservations are recommended. If I can help with anything else feel free to contact me.

You were monitoring or were you lurking. Ha Ha. Your composition of Room with a view is outstanding. Color, exposure, sharp. You nailed it. You are welcome to the HOG, Mr. Big Sky. I hope you can teach me a few things. David PS Our mountains in Florida are not quite as big.

Thank you for the comment on the photo. I guess the operative word would be digesting what I read from people sharing their expertise; a great site. I did not always have the mountains as a point of reference as lived in Louisiana for a few years where the highest point was the levee on the Mississippi river.
