Using a phone camera effectively takes concentrated practice, an understanding of the camera's limitations, learning the controls and perhaps most importantly, having the right attitude. If your attitude is "this is going to be really bad" then that's likely what you will get.

I like the subject, but the composition does feel a bit cut off at the bottom.

I think the light area in the bottom corner actually gives the composition a better overall light/dark balance. There's nothing specific within that area which distracts.

My approach in this situation is to simply place my camera bag into a standard hiking backpack, then carry it strapped on my back. I can line the inside of the backpack with towels or other materials if I feel a need for further cushioning. I don't really see a need to purchase a specialized photography gear backpack.

I myself would take the 24-105.

Yeah, that's probably the lens I'd go for too. And f/4 is plenty sufficient for outdoor daylight, which is likely what most of the photography will be on the visit.

Better check is the batteries need a charge.

Yes, with a multimeter. This should be the very first step, as it is the easiest to perform. Every household should have a multimeter! The simple ones are not at all expensive, under $10.

Looks nice in the pictures. But in product photography, pictures sometimes lie.

Typically, these are people who are obsessed with reading camera reviews and studying camera specs, rather than actually using their equipment and taking pictures. Their interest is generally focused on the technology, not the art of photography. And they are very opinionated about the technology.

I think the specific wing position for each shot is the cause for the variations of exposure on the bird, as the wing partially blocks the amount of light falling on the bird.

Clip testing for film is also for checking the first few frames' exposure accuracy and whether or not the developer's
processing time is good and not over or underdeveloped. Back in the day, my lab ran film clips, first thing in the AM and throughout the day to monitor processing consistency.

Be well! Ed

Yes, but that was for a different reason, not because the film was a few months past expiration date.

You've got a full month to learn your cameras' capabilities and which camera best suits the type of photography you are planning to do on the trip.

When you are familiar with your equipment, the answer as to what to take will come easily.

Will you be using your camera to shoot videos or only still photography?

There's no reason to take the camera down away from your face to advance the film between shots. And once advancing to the next frame after each shot becomes a routine habit, you will rarely forget to do it.

Oftentimes I plan in advance what I want to capture and prepare accordingly. Carrying loads of equipment "just in case" isn't really my thing.

If you look at one version for a while and then flip it, the image often appears disorienting at first. Until you get used to the flipped version.

In the context of multiple images (such as a photo compilation or portfolio), variation is key.
