My first "light bulb" moment came when I was shooting 1920x1080p AVCHD of a granddaughter playing softball. While editing the video I froze on the moment where the ball was inches from her bat. I "frame grabbed" it, printed it to 8x10 and it hung on the wall until she was a few years older.

Since then, I've taken foreign trips shooting 4K with a (very compact) Panasonic LX100. Frame grabs to 13x19 printed on a Canon Pro-100 printer are satisfying. I've added a 4K shooting Panasonic GX8 to my kit and do the same thing. All the current Panasonic cameras shoot 4K. The very new $2000 Panasonic GH5 has a "6K Photo Mode" but I don't know how that works.

With the adoption of 4K capabilities, Panasonic has put it in their firmware to do frame grabs from 4K in the camera. They promote it as "4K Photo Mode". You can watch a demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9by3f6qNCyM

Lots of software will "grab" frames from video. Lightroom is very good at it. My primary video editor is Premiere Elements and it has tools to grab individual frames. The common media player "VLC" does it too. These software tools will "grab" frames from any video from any camera. The "grab" captured in Lightroom from a 4K clip is 8 megapixels.

The significant trick for shooting video where you may want to grab frames is to make sure the shutter speed is high enough. It is common for video shooters to try to blur the shoot so that digital video looks "filmic". They may even use ND filters to be sure of slow shutter speeds. If you accept that video should look like video, you can shoot at the same shutter speeds you use for stills and the frame grabs will have less motion blur.

Hi ‘bsprague’... — — Thanks SO much for the Great Info. I’ll definitely make use of the Link and the info on the ‘6k Mode’ of the G-5. — Aditionally, it was reassuring to read that 13x19 prints were successfully printed. — Thanks Again.

I tweak in photoshop. the idea of shooting burst if you had a lot of shots could create an editing nightmare of so many shots.
Maybe I am not completely understanding. 4K should work.

I thought about this a little more. is this process happening all at the same time. I have seen graduation and I seem to remember all 3 sometimes
happen at once. I think the what has been said about bursts is correct but might need 2 or 3 cameraman.

The Canon 5D IV does 4K at 30fps and frame capture is quite simple. You may do it in camera or with a computer. I've used this feature many times with great results. One advantage to using a DSLR over a smart phone device is lenses. Smart phone devices are limited to little tiny lenses, DSLR'S are not.

Hi ‘morrison1116’... — — WOW, now that is Great to know. — I see that a reconditioned Mark-IV will go for 2.8k to 3.5k. — Thanks.

There are no cheap 6K cameras available. Decent ones are going to run minimum $10K, AFAIK, and the lenses start around that price too. You are much better off buying a Sony A9 mirrorless that shoots 20fps and will do bursts.

Hi ‘kymmarto’... — — Thanks for both the Link and info/advice. — I didn’t realize that a 6K costs THAT kind of money

TOPIC: ‘‘Frame Grabbing’ of 4K (and up) videos’

PREFACE: I have had excellent success by Videoing an event like a Graduation (using my 8MP Apple IPod Touch); and then I would use the IOS App called ‘VideoPix’ to easily view each frame in the Video, which I had captured to my IPod’s ‘camera-roll’.
=============
I then would determine which ONE frame shows the ‘precise’ moment that ALL THREE of the following are happening SIMULTANEOUSLY:
1. The Diploma is in both the Presenter’s and the Graduate’s LEFT hands; ...and,
2. The Presenter and the Graduate are shaking their right hands; ...and,
3. Both Presenter and Graduate are simultaneously looking at the Videographer; ...and,
4. Both are Smiling.
=============
I would NOW like to upgrade to a Camera (...or Camcorder ...or
Smartphone) that Videos in 4K or 6K or 8K.
=============
That way I can offer my client a HIGH Resolution 11 x 14 (or Larger) Portrait.
=============
I know that a 4K Frame yields a 8MP STILL; ...can anyone tell me what size ‘Still’ is produced by a 6K and 8K video frame.?
=============
There is an excellent treatise on the subject, however it’s now effectively three years old (March 2015)
...viz.:
Re-1: ‘Frame/Screen-Grabbing’ using the Panasonic ‘GK-4’ DSLR in 4K video mode.

Another ‘solution’ to capturing the ‘precise-moment’ MIGHT be to use a camera like the Sony ‘a9’, which operates at 20-fps.

Re-3: Sony A9 Speed Review: It's HERE!!!!

=========================

Dear Fellow Hogs,
Personally, I’m still hung up on Videoing in 4K or even 6K or 8K (both at 60fps If possible), and then ‘frame-grabbing’ the precise ‘moment’ that will produce the ‘specific’ composition that is desired (by further cropping and/or rotation and/or blurring). — Remember 4K will yield an 8MP captured-still, whereas a 6K or 8K yields a ?MP still. — Naturally I would additionally need a ‘tool’ like the ‘VideoPix’ App, which I use with the vids produced by my little Apple iPod Touch.
———————————
So, the questions are:
1. “If a 4K Video yields an 8MP Still, what will the yield be (in MP), for a 6K or 8K Video.?
2. Would Any Hog, consider using THIS technique for a Paid-Shoot (ex: Wedding, etc.) ...Explain please.
3. How or Do you see the Sony ‘a9’ fitting into this dialogue, with its 20-fps shooting speed. In what WAY would it be able to produce the ‘Precise Still Required’ for your paid shoot.?

Hi 'haroldross'... --- Since you have both the '50' and '60' can you tell me if there is a significant reduction in the '60' Image-Quality (as was claimed by some HOGS); -- -- Another Ques.: Does the Pop-up Flash of the '60' have a wider expanse (to handle the 21mm Wide-end); I like to take pictures of guests at Weddings, while they're seated at the round tables for Ten; I have the wives seated, with husbands standing behind them; ...but because the tables are SO close together{at some Events}, I'm forced to be as close as the opposite side of the Round table (i.e. 6' to 8' away from guests). SOOO, Harold, will the Flash be BOTH wide enough AND/OR bright enough to appropriately illuminate ALL the faces.???

Hi UHH Gang...
First: I prefer to 'realistically' CAPTURE a given portrait and or action; I do NOT wish to 'CREATE' my 'concept of reality', using post processing.
Second: I recently saw a product which I looked up on Google it was a device (then in kick starter), called: 'Arsenal'.
Third: Here are the results of my search:

More on this photo. The hands appear as hands should one is active one passive. I often comment on nudes hands. The main backdrop [Room divider] is fantastic and the rest of the jumble very interesting and sets the stage for the reason the mannequin is there. Note she is looking at the hat. If the Mannequin were laying across the bed as in one of the live Benny photos... it would be out of place.... the setting here is great. Excellent nude photo. Early Saturday morning the mannequins in the store windows were nude waiting new outfitting. That is where, as a 4 year old, I first experienced nude women, a difficult thing for real women to match, tragic being real!

Should not have told the Sargent in 1961 army that our army was Communist inspired, which it was. Sarg did not have a good sense of ironic humor... oh well, KP.

Definition: Droll humor is, dry, often ironic, an "Oh, ya, I didn't notice that!" that which takes a moment to digest and is ruined by playing a laugh track. While Trump is writing presidential decrees like getting rid of EPA rules... let him write one getting rid of laugh tracks.... Stanfield is funny, no laugh track needed, and like in a photo, that which does not add detracts. Main writer is Larry David... who is autobiographically portrait in "Curb Your Enthusiasm". In this photo Larry would be feeling the Mannequins breast just as a neighbor lady and young daughter walked into the room!! Larry is funny because he is so very disgusting. So disgusting that it is scheduled for the 9th season on HBO!!
