Hi, I was kind of in your spot too, wanton no to try FF photography. However with family a new camera wasn’t where I wanted to spend my money.

I have a Sony NEX 7 that I’m happy with, it’s quirky for sure , however a unique and interesting camera.

I opted for a used Canon 5D that I bought on eBay. Very happy with this choice. I’ve since upgraded to a 5Dii that I purchased from MBP.com and am very happy with this upgrade (2x the camera of the 5D).

I have 2 lenses that I bought used an EF 300 Lf4.0 is and an EF 200 f2.0. I also purchased new an EF 50 f1.8, all at very reasonable prices from MBP and B&H.

My more portable set up is NEX 7 with a Sigma 30 f1.4.

Canon 5Dii and tele get used for my sons baseball games and some hiking etc. my NEX7 goes with me in the cockpit of my 777 just in case I see something I want to capture. IQ suffers a bit due to shooting through windscreen but...good enough for some unique perspective!

Point is, used equipment is plenty good, affordable and usually more than enough for my attempts at the art of photography.

Good luck and I can recommend mob.com for buying and selling, they are always upfront and quick.

Thanks. Will post a pic or two as soon as possible. Last night was the last time I will be able to go for moon photography for awhile. Generally it is too cold here in northern Wisconsin (November - March) for me to have fingers that can manage my camera.

Also.... I believe the Sony A6000 May have a few settings that can help you once you nail the exposure.
Go to the mode settings, “SCN” then select “Hand-held Twilight” or “Night Scene”. I’ve had good results using these shooting modes.
Although these mode do not compensate for improper exposure.

Good luck.

Sony makes a good camera. I shoot a
NEX 7 and like the images, I also shoot a Canon 5D series, I like the images out of this camera also.

My buddy shoots with a Sony 6000 and he produces some fine images.

Point being is each camera offers some unique features, they are just different.

A few responses into this thread a post was “G11 a better camera”....Well, two very different cameras, the sensors are in two different classes. A6000 APSC vs what, a 1” sensor in the G11? The ability to use almost any lens system made with the A6000 vs a fixed lens on the G11.

The G11 is a fine camera. The Sony A6000 will alllow you to do a lot more if that is what you’d like.

Hi Larry,
I've got a bunch of time flying balloons and crewing.

The advice to just bring your fast wide angle or wide angle zoom is sound. You can grab nice shots while the crew is filling the balloon with hot air, the balloon and basket will be horizontal on the ground and the burners will be lit off! Spectacular shot from the basket into the envelope.

Also great advice while on the flight, just enjoy it, don't worry about any shots of the ground.

Remember to get the emails of the crew so you can send them photos too!

Cheers!

You know, from my Airbus cockpit I long for the years when we flew in ground contact...that's when theagic of flying comes alive!

Thanks for sharing those videos!

Hi,
I've used a Lumix for years and just switch to a Sony NEX7. Either fits in the flight bag nicely.

I've of course noticed the difference in the quality of my photo due to the NEX tech specs, sensor size, etc. however over the years have captured some great sights with my Lumix.

If you can swing the Song RX, that would be a sweet package.

Like I said before...AirBus. Not a tanker. Airliner. IAE engines. United or USAirways maybe Spirit.

You're looking at the starboard wing with the winglet or the tail feathers trying to make them into refueling booms.

Just a plain old plane. AirBus.
