At first I thought it was some kind of Grosbeak maybe in the bunting group. My thoughts changed when I compared the length of the wing feathers with the pics in my bird book. Overall coloration is an unknown to me. I like to hear something more substantial from a birder. I'm wondering also.

It appears to be a Scaly-breasted Munia which is a native to Malasia and thereabouts. Most likely escaped from somebody's birdcage. They have been seen around California. Several have been seen in the Goleta Slough near Santa Barbara.

It has the look of a Corn-borer but the aircraft references are more creative.

Only the old skinny ones have those knees.

Yes, it's a skipper. Cute li'l fellers. They even have a face.

It may be a Fiery Skipper but don't hold me to it. They are cute . What distinguishes them from moths is their knobby antennae.

Thank you very much Dee Dee for introducing me to the Skipper butterfly. I did now look it up in Wikipedia and learn it's a butterfly because it's diurnal (daytime active) I guess, but beyond that it gets quite complicated. Sorry I confused matters by mistakenly terming it a "moth". Thanks for your help. BTW, I like the Skipper pic better too. It's too bad there doesn't seem to be a way to edit the mistake out in the initial post that I could find.

You can tell the difference with most of the butterflies in that they have knobby antennae instead of feathery antennae of moths.

Take a look in one of your bird books like Kaufman's Birds of North America or National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America and you will see it called "northern". When I first saw it I also said Bobwhite but checked the guides and Northern was in front of Bobwhite. Bird people have congresses every so often and sit around changing names. Anyway Bobwhite is a good call.

I forgot to add that it was also a male. Maybe on a "business" trip.

Sorry you are wrong I lived on Maui for over 7 years and have seen many of these they are the state bird of Hawaii, there are many like the picture you posted looks like the one on wikipedia, and there are those who are a bit more colorful, the females are smaller but still a decent size this was a close up of him so he may look larger to you than he is but rest assured he is a NENe and is pretty well known as he frequents this beach(Po'olenalena). If you really want a good chance to see a few of them the area inside Haleakala National Park(the section above Kula) is a great place as well as south west of Hana, this is where our property is but not as colorful or big as goose on the mainland. We are moving back home to build on our property hopefully this late fall, cant wait to get back to the water and those Maui breezes some call the tradewinds. Thanks for looking.
Sorry you are wrong I lived on Maui for over 7 yea... (show quote)

Sorry to doubt you. I took that picture on Kauai. I go to the Islands every year and ride my bicycle up Haleakala and see the NeNe's up by the visitor center and other places. Been doing that for 25 years and always see the geese look as the picture I took. No Wikipedia shot. I guess what throws me is the fact that I have never seen on with a red bill. Since they are descended form Canada geese, they tend to look like them. Take care and enjoy Maui. We will be there in January.
