Maybe the use of a softbox on your flash will make the light less startling for the little girl.

It will, you are spot on, and I have used it for adults, I just thought the puppet might have been more approachable. Thank you for a good point though.

Can you make the face happier? It looks worried.

Good call, thank you, I can try and lift the eyes a little, the problem is I can't think of a way of building in a smile?

Maybe make a tongue like a lapping dog?

Thanks for the feedback :)

I've been asked to shoot a birthday party for 3 year old's, great stuff. I've been told that one of the children, twins, the little girl, is afraid of flashes !!

I've scouted the hall, its very dark even with the lighting from the high ceiling, gonna set up a couple of remote flashes behind brollies, but for close up work, what to do?

I came up with the idea of a 'puppet' on my ring flash, photo attached, what do you think, good idea, or a bit weird and scary?

I took this photo on Christmas Eve of my sister and brother-in-law. They hosted a lovely dinner for our family and this is the only photo I took of them -- ugh! Is there anyone who can help me get rid of the flash reflection in the window? I would so appreciate it so I can share with everyone. Thank you!

This is my offering to the thread :)

Actually do tell me if this is a back focus issue. I know the photo is not the greatest. This is not my concern. It seems that her right eye is in focus.

This was shot outdoors at night. The lighting comes from a lamp post. I was using my F1.8 "Nifty Fifty". It is a Sony lens. I was shooting with auto focus on. Metering mode was center weighted average. The focal length was 35mm. Using aperture Priority.

Is this a back focus issue? Or is it just how I shot it and that I have nothing to worry about?

I'm not sure what distance you were from her when you took the shot, if you were stood a metre away, then you would expect a depth of field of around 1.35 cm with your aperture at 1.8 and a 50mm lens. This looks about what you have achieved, so all would appear to be well. You can download depth of field calculators for free from the web for your PC or your smart phone, I find them really helpful sometimes, especially with hyperfocal distances.

Taktale. How big was the hand carving.

About 50 feet I'd say, I intend to re visit at some point and I will get a person in the shot as well to bring some scale to the image, it really is an impressive thing to see.

Don't know what has happened but started last night - when I open up a page with posts, as in the photography newsletter, I have lost the reply, quote reply facility which appears at the bottom of each post - can anyone help?

I get this effect when I use the link from an email, if I log in after using the link I can then see the usual prompts, not sure if this is what you are experiencing, but hope it might help a little. Regards Tom

Thank you for the lovely images, they are great, Lake Vyrnwy is a really great place to visit, to think the whole landscape is man made is staggering. My wife and I went for a stroll into the woods from a viewing point and came across the sculpture below, it really stunned me, sorry for the poor quality, but I hope to re-visit the place soon with more than my mobile phone :)
