Maybe you would be more careful . If you didn't have the filter on the end . I'm aware of every thing I do when I'm packing my camera ,

David McKay in his book "Photography Demystified" suggested that using filters, except in rare circumstances, isn't a good idea. He suggests that putting a $20 or $30 filter on a $2000 lens undermines the quality of the lens. It does seem make sense. He says that using a lens hood will protect the glass from damage and not degrade image quality. Any comments from the "hogs"? Are there high quality filters that work without degrading images made with high end lenses?

I have been saying the same thing for years , but no one seams to under stand , it has been proven, and tested , they put a bunch of lenses , old ones that were collect and given to them , under all sorts of test from rolling down hills with a lot of rocks to dripping on rocks , falling out of cars , and a bunch more , to many different things to list , and the out come was a lens hood saved many more than a filter did , the filter was smashed then the lens was damaged if all you had was a filler , but a lens hood on the end ,you had to have the lens hit the rock or what ever and it had to be the right size to to let the rock in and right length , , and this was written up in a photo mag in the seventies , I never use a filter now a polarizer some time for the glare not to protec , never damaged a lens yet since and I'm taking a lot more photoes than the average shooter , a few thousand a year but not as many as some , in my slide days it wasn't as many
Because of the cost of a roll of slides . But now there is no cost you can shoot a few hundered and save them on some
Medeium and start over or deleat what you don't want , and there is no need for colour filters you can do all that in computer .

Where can I get a set of old head lights , you know the kind where' you opened the lens that was on a hinge , and at
Night you lit a candle that was inside . That was fun you had to stop about every mile because they would blow out
All the time , my dad give me his lighter and I was the fire man for the lights , what fun a, about as much fun as camera
Film , . It may be illegal this day and age , like film should be , because of the cost , call it high way robbery

This photo could be a winner for people who live in summer or hunting cabins , also people who live in log houses , or like minded people in any house . Just have a few blown up to a size of a 32 inch or 40 inch TV , and I bet you will sell them , advertise in the right books , log home books , cottage by the lake books , etc . Just send me one for the idea
When there a hit,

Don't worry about the so-called 'entry level' status. It is basically a black box with a lens. Nikon 'entry level' lenses are generally pretty good. I used a D40 for several years until I went to a D7000 and quite honestly, I see no difference in the quality of photos.

Maybe eye glasses would help . Or try printing them out to say 8x10 . It should be night and day difference .

Dying to know what entry level DSLR did you get? My first one many years ago was a Canon 20D.

Does Nikon D3300 ring a bell , like he printed out at beginning of his page .

JPEG. As soon as I don't shoot RAW I regret it. I thought it might be a lost cause but thought is was worth asking.

Allways shoot raw first than shot JPEG after if you can , if your shooting wild birds
And other anamels you may never get the second chance ,, and if your S raw at
Least you have better chance of saving something from your outing like this eagle
If it was a raw shot , you would be able to get a ton more of detail out of the wing and body , it could have been , but ?

Never thought of taking a meter reading off of one of the tree trunks. I don't know why but exposure is one topic I seem to have trouble grasping. My mind balks at a few things - algebra, engines, and, apparently, exposure! :( Gotta give it another try.

It sounds like you have no idea what is or how to control control exposure , there is several ways to adjust exposure when you know what it is and what to do , to get best exposure , you can buy a faster lens or ,use wider fstop , higher ISO ,slower shutter speed less stop lower ISO etc learn how to increase or decrease all the above

What is the macro used for . I would think it is a little short for insects flowers , to much bending , for face portrait
It may be ok , on a full frame it's only 10 mm away from normal . I would think a 120 mm or at least 90mml

Saw this eagle yesterday and thought of Regis. Just had to post.

Well your not going to get what Reag gets with that lens it's probable a 300mm max and a cheap one at that , so don't
compare to his gear , his what ? Over $6 or $7000 lens and a doubler , it would be a shot if you could pull it in close and frame ir depending if it was sharp ,it looks like my 70-300 at the most , and it is not a good picture , is it me it doesent matter what kind of shot is put on the hog , it's almost a given every one will praise it , we Canadians I think are more likely to tell the truth , if it's a crappy picture say it ,never mind all the other fudging tell it as you see it , where all grown ups we can Handel , I have seen the the most afull pictures in these with nothing but praise towards it , come on gang it's not what your striving for I hope ,

Could be . another sciences guy explained it like this , coal is the worst just as different liquids in a drinking glass ,the crap in the air finds its own levels in the
atmosphere and each type of pollution is there and they form a ring ,each a different size around the earth , from what comes out of the tail pipe of your car
to the smells coming out of a garbage dump to the perfume your wife splashes on
To the sweat or your skin .most are harmless ,then there is the fossil fuels of burning ,tons and tons of coal burning day in and day out non stop since man
Started using it . so try o imagine a huge inner tube around the earth and a mile
thick and the stuff of which it's made off is only the microscope small as germs
When it on the earth but when it's high in the air way way way up there it expands
a hundered times it's size , and you can't see it ,but it's there causing a small maginafiing effect on the sun rays that are going through it . and it's getting to be
Bigger inner tube every day that coal is being burned , maybe you have a better
Picture of it now ,that and the glaceres flowing like niagra falls , or the river of no return ,
Could be . another sciences guy explained it like ... (show quote)

Each poluition has its own level and it's own tube and the coal is the biggest one
