Thanks so much for all the helpful advice! I may look into rentals as I had not idea it would be that expensive and I'm not sure how often I would get the chance to use one!

I will be traveling to Hawaii for the holidays and was wondering if anyone had any advice on a QUALITY underwater camera housing for my Canon 5DMII as this is obviously an important purchase! Any advice on underwater photography and/or things not to miss while there are also very appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Rongnongno, are you saying you can get the exact power setting your flash was on? I have only ever seen (the programs I use anyway) tell you if the flash fired or not, but no detailed info. I'd love to know of one that does if it exists! Thanks for any info...

Ok, great! I was thinking when I posted it that the whole video was on the construction, so I was confused. Happy building!

Ok, so I just went to watch the video again (it's been a while) and when I clicked on that particular one, another started playing where she's describing posing. Tried it several times and never got the correct video, but it sounds like (hopefully) you did!

WATCH THIS VIDEO!!! I ditto those who suggest insulation from your local hardware store and here is a video showing how to do it. http://www.creativelive.com/courses/shoot-with-sue-bryce
In case the link doesn't work, go to creativelive.com and click on 'Catalog'. (This will also introduce you to a wonderful learning resource if you don't know about it already!) Under 'Popular Courses' select 'Inside the Glamour Studio' which is a wonderful course by Sue Bryce. Scroll down to the 6th video which is on how to construct your own V-Flats. Lucky you, this video is free to watch to entice you to buy the rest of the course. You could also do this another way with a support on opposite sides of two panels so they could be set next to each other creating a flat wall if you wanted. So affordable! You could have each side a different color as well. Creativelive has free live courses that you can purchase and watch any time if you want. I never watch TV anymore! I always have it on one screen while working on the other. Great resource!

Several things to consider here. First, find out if there will be a rehearsal. Most events I cover have one a few days before if not at least hours before. Dealing with ambient light it would help to get test shots so you know how to set your white balance (ask the person in charge of lighting if what you see at the rehearsal is what it will be the night of the event), or you may be looking at lots of color correcting (they may be very yellow depending on lighting). Also, ask someone in charge of the venue if you are even allowed to use a flash during the event. Some will not allow this, but if they do by all means get a flash and learn to use it....rent if you don't have the cash. Even for close ups (if you are doing them) a small amount helps liven the eyes. Just make sure not to do what most do when they first start using flash and over do it. It results in flat and "flashy" images (ie subject blown out with no detail and dark background). Event photography is very challenging as you have no control over lighting, the subjects are often moving (make sure to focus on the face and don't use too shallow a depth of field or too slow a shutter speed), and lighting changes often with spotlights etc. I disagree with the earlier comment about Al Servo....I use it ONLY when the subjects are constantly moving. See this link and good luck! http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/10591/what-is-the-difference-between-al-focus-and-al-servo-autofocus-modes

I believe that is one of the attitudes that starts wars or at the very least mud-slinging.

It's not an attitude.....it's freedom of speech. We all have the right to speak our minds and show our beliefs. I wouldn't want to get into an ugly mudslinging war....a peaceful exchange of ideas is more my mindset, so please do not read something negative into my statement.

I have actually been thinking about doing a series of fine art photographs with political content. Can't promise I wouldn't "bash" the other side though. Bashing is a bit of a strong word, however.....pointing out their blatant disregard for our freedom and rights as individuals is more my point. I'd like to see where this goes...

I know you are wanting something much larger than most places provide and I don't know if this would work, BUT....have you looked into the possibility of taking the photo and slicing it into smaller posters you could mount side by side to make the size you want? I would think there would be a software out there that could facilitate the sectioning part of that for you.

I just Googled "wall murals" and am looking at Megaprint.com....check them out and good luck!

Happy weekend, UHH crowd. I am traveling soon to Vancouver (driving there from Seattle) and a bit later to Arizona (traveling between Antelope Canyon and Grand Canyon) and wondered if anyone has tips on what to see while I'm in and in between these places/tour guide tips/etc! Also, I am shopping for a travel bag with wheels that fits carry-on size requirements and wanted tips if you have them. Thanks in advance!

Funny, although it was directed at landscape photography I just read an article yesterday giving the same tip. It was an article written by a photographer who does landscape photography at night with NO ambient light and uses a flashlight to get his focus before doing a 5 minute or more long exposure shot. Interesting.....and you can find it here:

Good Morning all of you UHHer's, the question that I pose for this morning is this. I am setting up tethering with my camera using LR4 or I might use Canon's software, undecided yet. If I do use LR4, I will be using a dedicated External HD 1TB, Do the images get down loaded as normal procedures or is there a specific procedure. If I use canons software then i can control camera by way of computer and also images as they come in too. What would you do?

Greetings sportyman140,

I shoot with a Nikon, but tether using LR4 on a Macbook Pro (a laptop). I set up a folder (and subfolders if wanted or needed) on whatever drive I choose to store and access my images. My RAW images are brought in and automatically saved as RAW images and then I can process them any way I want and any program(s) I choose to use. I always shoot in RAW to preserve the digital negative so I can always revert back to it if necessary.

I also recommend you back-up all your images at least on one other drive or media location, and preferably two or more. One never knows when your HD(s) will fail, and it will fail sometime in the future. They start wearing out from the first time you turn a new HD on, just like any other piece of electronic equipment . . . . . . . just like a new born after he/she takes their first breath.

I was told by a very well respected international professional photographer, not 2 days ago, that he had been on a very important shooting and if he didn't obsessively back up all his images, he would have lost all the photos for that shoot because he cleared his camera's memory card, since he needed additional space for another immediate shooting, and his number 1 storage HD crashed and burned . . . but, since he was adamant in keeping more than one back-up, he still had all his images and was able to process them and complete the job. Did I mention that it was a $4,000 job? Needless to say, he was very pleased with his redundant back-up! :-) :-) :-)

I guess I answered a little more than requested, but I hope it was worth my time writing and your time reading it. Also, when you think about it, storage space on external drives are actually very cheap insurance, whether for a hired job, or, merely personal photos that may be passed down for generations. :-)

NO Actually you just convinced me to make 2 backups for now on with any job work. That is a great story about other photographer. Thank you very much!!!

Food for thought for all you avid backupers! Are you storing both backups in your home/studio? I know it may NEVER happen, but if that home/studio were to burn to the ground you lose your computer, your backup, and your backup of your backup. I have a safety deposit box at the bank one backup goes to.....not to make you paranoid, but imagine losing every image you have! Also, check into Tether Tools for a top for your extra tripod if you haven't already. I'm just learning about tethering, so no help there, sorry!
