I was playing with my dad's D800 and noticed he had his camera set to Auto ISO. Does the D300s body have this capability?

Thanks UH.

No I don't. Was planning on relying on a tri-pod and my fast lens to get the shot.

I'm going camping this weekend and was curious if anyone had any tips for shooting around the campfire? I'll be using my D300s w/the Nikon DX 35mm F1.8

I know I'll probably have to shoot around 1 second at F1.8-2.8 but What should I set my ISO at and should i rely on white balance (auto)?

Thanks UH.

Do you have a flash with wireless mode? I previously discussed a technique to use off-camera flash to enhance the glow of the fire so you can light the faces of the campers better:

I would of liked to see the truck shot with a macro lense. some close up shots of the grill/lights would be cool.

I just noticed that you are in SD...I'm an SD person...born and raised now living in WV...

I'm going to guess that this wave isn't actually IN SD...but up the coast a ways...maybe Solana Beach? In that area?

OR

Blacks Beach?

Or

Sunset Cliffs?

You guessed it....Sunset Cliffs.

Ouch...bad memories....lol...getting in the water and getting out as I recall was hazardous to one's health....the rocks and waves didn't cooperate.

Depending on what the tides are doing and the size of the swell makes all the difference but you're correct...Some of the surf spots can be pretty scary at times. I've taken my fair share of beatings. Here is another pic from the same day, same spot.

Shooting with a Nikkor 18-200mm on a D300s. I wish the surfers face was brighter and showed more detail. Am I dreaming believing this is possible with my 18-200mm? Do I need a 400mm+ size lens to capture this amount of detail?

Any assistance would be helpful including tips in post production.

Both Photos shot with Nikkor 18mm-200mm (my one and only lens). Both pictures shot on Aperture Priority.

1st photo of pig in focus (1/10 | F5.6 | ISO400)

2nd photo of guitar in focus (1/5 | F5.6 | ISO400)

I'm a newbie but I want you to be blunt with your analysis.

Thanks,

Thought I would drop everyone a quick note and introduce myself. My name is Jeff and I reside in sunny San Diego, CA. My father was nice enough to give me his Nikon D300s when he recently upgrated to the D800. I purchased the Nikkor 18mm-200mm lens this past Saturday and can't seem to put the camera down. I never knew I was going to have so much fun with this new toy. Here are a few pictures I took on my first day of shooting. It was a cloudy day at the beach but I made do with the flat light. And the second was my lunch. I love sandwiches. Super stoked to enter this world of photography and learn from all of you.
