I have that lens, and truly love it. I dropped it down some rocks and beat it up pretty good, so I knew it was a goner. I contacted Nikon and they said send it in for an estimate. A few days later they sent me an estimate of $600 to repair it, and considering the pile of rubble I sent them I didn't think that was possible, and contacted them by phone. The service center assured me that it would be in perfect condition when they sent it back. Sure enough, when it came back it was perfect except there was a slight scuff mark on one of the barrels that didn't hurt anything. In reality what they had done was take a brand new lens off the shelf and swap the lens barrel and sent it back (with a different serial #) as repaired for only $600. I was very happy to get that lens back for 1/4 the cost of a new one. My suggestion is, send it to Nikon for an estimate, and hope you get as lucky as I did.

Thank you for your advice. I switched M/A switch a few times without any result. I will call Nikon.

You're welcome, but I don't believe you liked my response. My response is based on personal experience. Auto focus on my favorite lens, my Canon EF 28-300L, failed a few years ago. My only option was to send the lens to Canon repair where they replaced the failed auto focus parts and cleaned the lens elements. These lenses aren't designed for consumer servicing. They are quite complex and require special tools and training to service. I wish you the best of luck with your lens situation. I know what it's like to have to send favorite lenses, both Canon and Nikkor, off to the service facility, and I know how expensive it can be, but repairing will most always cost way less than replacing. Case in point, my EF 28-300L has been to service twice in the 14 years I've owned it. Repair and service costs have come to about $1300, to replave the AF and then later the aperture mechanisim. It's a fairly old lens and I use it pretty much every day. It would cost me around $2400 to replace the lens. I bought the lens used from a school in Canada.

I can use my lens in manual focusing mode but it is not the best decision. I am going to ask specialist about repair cost and after that will think what to do.

My favorite lens autofocus stopped working. Switch M/A M in M/A position. Yesterday I cleaned electronic lens contacts but problem still persists. I tried using this lens on 2 cameras with the same result. Using another lens on these cameras autofocus is working. I need advice for solving my problem.

MMC,It's nice. lots of clarity. only problem is,, it was a very foggy early morning. The fog bank was moving along the ground changing the entire scene as I stood their talking pictures. I have at least 6 more shots taken in a time frame of 6-7 min. All have a noticably different tonal qualities to them. Although I do appreciate your working with my shot, and IT IS very nicely done, there was no clarity due to the heavy fog moving in. I truely like what you did, but you just made my point.

mwsilvers just accused me of having NO appreciation for art. If you had read my original posting,as well as my other responses, you would not come to that conclusion. Therefore ,I would have to accuse you of reading my post with a preconceived notion that I am anti editing, which is completely untrue.

In a nutshell, my original posting was a simple pondering of what we are subject to in the world of visuals. Simply put, is what we see really what we are seeing, or has it been "doctored" to elisit a certain viseral response.

I have done a bit of in camera editing by changing the white balance and using some of the in camera tools olympus puts in there.

I have taken a blazing sunset, and turned it into a more monogaphic scene by stretching the white balance. REAL editing? not hardly,BUT editing non the less. SO I do appreciate art. Actualy I went to college to major in art. Couldn't afford to finish college, so I moved on with life.

Making claims that I am anti art,or anti editing is childish at best, seeing that you know nothing of my personal backround. AGAIN,stop reading, and start photographing. Much more fun. One more point, the end of a journey is not always the climax. Often it is the adventures along the way that make for memorable moments. So it is with my photography. I get real joy in the act of searching out things or places to photograph and sometimes the aventure accociated with going out and SEEING. Sometimes that is all it is, just seeing.

A blessed Christmas to all. And remember the REASON for the season.

Thank you for your comments and informing me about "For your consideration". BTW I would not try to change picture in your link because it is almost perfect IMHO. Before posting OP picture with my rendition I asked and receive OP permission.

One is the editor attempts to retain the intent of the original.

One is the photographer explains their problem and asks how to fix it.

One is the photographer says, I'm looking for any and all ideas; show me yours.

The third is what "My Image/Your View" is based on, a weekly editing challenging in For Your Consideration section. It's great fun, both as host and participant, to see all the interpretations possible from a single photo. This week's is underway. Most weeks you will find everything from minimal edits to fanciful (composites, paintings, sketches and more).

I think that taking pictures and PP should go together. I checked some of your pictures and tried improve one of them. If you do not mind I can show my rendition here.

when I view some of the posts that are put up on the hog, many of them are very nice, some are outstanding, and some are just too over prossessed.

Now this is just my humble opinion.

Some of the posts are just too evenly lit, every shadow detail is available, trees and mountains are all just picture post card perfect. Now I have been around enough to know that scenic opportunities are rarely ,if ever perfectly illuminated. So...my thought is, am I the only one who is satisfied with capturing a given scene SOOC ?

I often shoot my scenics with both eyes open with the thought of capturing in camera exactly what is before me, or as close as I can get it given the broad spectrum of light falling on a given vista.

I'm afraid that there is so much PP of everything ,that what we all are exposed to now are all just personal renditions of what is or was actually there. Some post are so perfectly PP'd, that they take on the apperance of a lithograph rather than a photograph.
I read only your post and did not read others. My opinion that taking picture and PP must go together. I checked some of your pictures without PP and tried to improve one of them. If you do not mind I can show my rendition here.
Example: taking a picture of the sun will always render the rest of the scene whofully under exposed, yet I see shots with the sun as evenly lit as the surrounding landscape. Yes, there are times when it is possible to shoot a sun scene and have some forground or backround lit. But not evenly. I have tried. something has to give.

I feel like a lone wolf trying to capture what I see as it is, while many are manipulating their shots to render them more perfect or "pleasing" to the eye.

With so much pp going on, it's very hard to know what is real anymore.

Just my observations and ramblings.

Hello Friends,
My question is about auto iso settings. In shooting indoors with my Canon 70 D and 60 D with top canon L lenses I have been avoiding flash. I use 160 or higher shutter and around 5.6 aperture in manual. The iso sometimes runs up to 3200 with some noise. In stepping up to another body would I have to go to a full-frame, or a different camera to get the higher iso? Setting suggestions would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Mick

Use tripod and increase shutter speed.
