Subscription software is a great deal for the software companies: steady monthly income. But there's nothing to stop them from doubling, or tripling, the monthly cost in the future.
LR/PS are great, but I prefer free, open source products like Gimp.
Anyone else remember the days when you could buy/lease PS and only upgrade to the latest version if you wanted to? Not everyone wants/needs the latest "gadget" that comes with upgrades.

Too true!I had Lightroom at LR2 and did not always upgrade. I used Photoshop Elements and often I got an upgrade when I bought a piece of hardware. In twenty years with Adobe I spent about $900 on upgrades. Compare this to $2400 on a subscription. Now Pros often have to keep up with the latest and greatest but hobbyists really do not. Adobe has not raised their subscription prices since their inception but they are beginning to add on other options for better service. Right now they are options but as the market changes who knows how this will trend

$10 a month for, lets say 10 things, is only $1,200 a year.
But ONE item (charge) is only $10. Affordable.
10 for this, 7 for that, 12 for the other, .......

It all adds up especially for a retiree on a fixed income.

The problem is Lightroom(cloud) is no longer cloud only but can be used with any folder on one's computer. It does not have a catalogue, print module and several other things found in Lightroom Classic. It is being pushed by several influencers who seem to think it is the future of Lightroom. It also kind of pushes renting more cloud storage since anything stored on the cloud then has more of the options that were found in classic. If you have a subscription it costs nothing to try it since it is part of the deal. I tried it and found it lacking to my needs. According to Victoria Bampton( kind of official Adobe shill) they will be adding more to this Lightroom( formerly known as cloud) in the future. Perhaps classic will slowly( years upon years) be phased out

Interesting idea about the profit motive since Adobe certainly has been doing that for quite some time starting with the subscription only model. I do wonder if they will eventually merge the two Lightrooms. Matt and his colleague, Brian Matiash, seem to think so though they differ on when this will occur, the former saying in 5 to 10 years, the latter in 5 years. I do wonder why they are pushing this agenda. Both claim not to be Adobe fan boys, but when push came to shove on a recent podcast, they dissed all the competitors. Are they fed info we are not? It was really annoying to me that their take things was not objective but there solely to push their agenda.

Thanks. I don't know where his/her comment came from. I'm not the only one who feels this way about the generative fill. This guy backs up everything I've said about it's use in being able to make prints. It's great for Instagram or removing small things from your images where the resolution doesn;t matter much.

This guy agrees with you. It's not ready for prime time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSmhEzFkgT8

This whole credit thing is a bit confusing. Will that include subject detection, when you do it online? If they are not really charging for it what's the point? I do not use Photoshop that often but I think someone who relies on it professionally could be put a disadvantage if they have big project and run out of credits

You also need to back up the folder with various presets and such. This is located on a PC in Users( your name) AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom. This contains all your presets and customizations that are not saved in the catalogue. I know it sounds crazy but I have had to to this several times and the catalogue per se does not save these. The Lightroom Queen has more information on this at the Adobe site

The biggest advantage to some is that one does not need to subscribe but can buy it stand alone. They do offer subscriptions but as of now they are not required. The other advantage to some is there is not a "Catalogue" as pictures accessed directly form the folders you download your pictures into. To me it is a rather intuitive easy software to use. Combined with the raster editor, Affinity, one can accomplish pretty much the same results achieved in Adobe products without a monthly cost, which is good for many hobbyists and seniors, like myself, on a fixed income. While it's printing module is nowhere near as accomplished as Lightroom's it post processing is easy and quick after a short learning curve. It also relies on presets, and it is easy to add your own.

About 4 years ago I had a problem with that edition of On1 camera Raw( it would not load) and it too them a 5 days to get back to me. It was over the Thanksgiving weekend but still. The solution they offered was convoluted at best so I got my money back. However a few months later when I got anew hard drive and rebooted Windows 10 I tried a trial version and all was good. I like On1 Raw but I don't think it plays well with windows and the tech support leaves something to be desired. I get the impression they are rather small company

According to Steve Perry, the Z9 is a good camera with some very nice features. I'm all set to order one as soon as they cut the price in half.

Just remember the D500 was about 25% the cost of it's big brother the D5. Hopefully they will take much of the technology of the Z9 and make a more hobbyist friendly model in cost and size. The flagship of any line is not for everyone but their spawn might just fit the bill.

Most readers know that Joseph Cristina never let facts get in the way of an online click and bait. Sadly, you and BigDaddy are making assumptions and conclusions without full knowledge. Take some time to oull your heads out of the sand and read up. If you discontinue your subscription, you do not lose all your edits or jpegs. That's because they are never in LR, LR is a catalog that points to the files location and the edits are saved in a sidecar file. Since you are so fascinated by life 20 years ago, think of it as if someone removed the card from the Dewey Decimal system at the library. The card may be gone, but the book is still on the shelf. True, the Develop module stops, so you can not go back and re-edit or create new edits, but you don't lose previous work. It's still right there on your hard drive.

Of course if you had read further you would have seen that I cited another reference to show I was not sure of the veracity of his statement. You will also note that I did not say pictures would be lost since yes LR does not store the picture. For the record I have using LR for about 14 years so I am pretty familiar on to how it works. I understand your point of view but it would be nice if you could come off you high horse and appreciate other viewpoints, Because in the end the final product is all that matters, how you get there is up to you. And most people will not know if you used an old version of software or a new one. You must please you client if you are a pro and please yourself if you are hobbyist.

Are you saying with LR and PS rental, you stop renting and you lose all your edits? I guess IF your edits are all contained in the catalogue section of LR, then lose LR, lose your edits. That would deep six it for me for sure. I use Affinity now, and it reads old PS PSD files and saves development files in PSD format if you wish. I assume PS can read Affinity PSD files as well.

IMNSHO, this is a critical issue?

Since LR is catalogue based once the subscription is ended you have no access to the develop module. Your RAW files still exist but in an unedited form. I have heard on Joseph Cristina's website that without the subscription LR will not even open. I have heard from others that the library module will open but I am not sure if you can export these edited photos. Needless to say once you subscribe to Adobe you are committed or maybe you should be committed!😎The is one alternative that you could subscribe on a as need basis but I find that method does not suit my workflow since as a hobbyist I am always editing
