I'm shooting a Nikon d500. The RAW files are 14MB, which yields a 35MB tif file and a 6MB jpg file. At 300 ppi, which is the best file to send to an ink jet printer? They both look good but I would think that the tif uses more ink. Eh?

Continuing the subject: Under the heading of "should have known better" I had tried some of the "compatible" inks as sold on Amazon. $75 for Canon ink and $18 for the K-ink cartridges. I intended to keep the letter from K-ink folks but she said that their ink is sold as general office ink and would be dull compared to photo ink. And as I found out, will not print on paper what you see on your screen and you just can't "tweak" it enough to get it right. So if you are going to print photos, use the ink, software, and paper from the same source, in my case Canon. For all that, I've about decided to just send them off, a photo buddy does and it really doesn't cost any more than doing it yourself. She uses White House Custom Color, whcc.com, 11x14, $4.40 and over $12 is free shipping. Ah, the world if full of choices. Top photo is Canon ink, bottom is with K-ink.

I have the Thom Hogan publication, from Amazon. I put it on my iPad so when traveling have an easy handy reference. You can get an "e" version of the manual direct from Nikon just to have it with you.

Still trying to attach a photo of the bad image.
Nope, can't attach today, tried it on two different computers, and I've attached a lot of pictures before now.

I have an image of a leopard taken in early morning shade, Mala Mala, SA. Of course it has a color cast on the cool side. I've done color correction in PS, white balance, etc and it looks good on the screen reference color balance, what I see on the screen is what I saw there. But... no matter how I print it, there is a green color cast. I've printed it with PS control and with Canon printer in control on Canon paper, same results. I was told to "twink" it a little bit, same results. I just previewed this post and the image shown is what I see on the screen prior to printing. So I've taken a photo of my printing results. What am I not doing or doing wrong. Well I've attached a lot of photos but the attachment feature isn't working today.

I've had the 16-300 on my d7200 then upgraded to the d500. It stays on the camera unless I'm shooting the 150-600 catching birds a long way off. I carry a 1.4x in my pocket but have never found the need for it, 300x1.5=450mm and that's good.

Don't forget the triangle. As the light decreases then you increase the ISO or change the "f" stop. Since the "f" stop controls the depth of field, the ISO is used to maintain the original DOF.

I love high ISO! With the good noise reduction software, (Neat.com) anything goes. Last month I was shooting sandhill cranes 20 minutes before sunrise as they left their overnight roost in the shallow lake. 1/1500 with an ISO of 25,000. Not going to get the shot if you don't go that high and not going to get clear wing tips with less speed. Cleaned up the image in post and have some unusual shots that I like. Won't win any prizes but I like them and that's what counts.

Located near Socorro, NM, this is a wildlife refuge serving mainly Sandhill cranes and snow geese during the winter. Fields are planted and cultivated for their feed. Periodically rows of grain are mowed for them to consume. Water is diverted through canals from the Rio Grande to flood the fields and provide a safe place to overnight, protected from predators. During the early and late hours they fly back and forth and one tries to be in the right place at the right time to capture a few images. Lots of fun, good motels in Socorro if you go. The cranes mate for life so there are often two together.

I took my T150-600 to South Africa, Central America, & Ecuador. Put it in your hand carry bag or back pack. You may get the idea that most of us who travel a lot NEVER check anything if you want it on the other end and in working condition. Just look out the window as they load/unload baggage and you'll see why. That is if it gets past TSA/baggage handler sticky fingers. Have a good time!

Ha, here's a bird in flight, Tamron 150-600mm, on a d500. @600mm, f6.3, 1/1600, ISO 2500

The Tamron 150-600, the original, works just great hand held. I'd attach a bird in flight photo but haven't figured out how in this box.

Nikon D500 with a Tamron. 16-500. It stays on the camera except for long range stuff, then Tamron 150-600.
