Several weeks ago I asked for input on buying a used or refurbished camera. I bought the refurbished from Nikon. Here are some of the results. 1st cherry tree, 50mm stack of 10. Next is a plum bloom, 50 mm stack of 10. Next is a Gerber daisy with 90mm macro, and in close. Finally the cherry tree in full bloom, 70-300mm set at 70mm. I'm pleased with the camera. Finally a full photo of the cherry tree for all the snow birds that are still shoveling. (I'm in Las Vegas)
speters, well, I've made it around the sun 82 times so I'm in the save mode on walking, zoom is in.
Note I said I want a zoom. The two primes are what I already have. Found a 70-300 on B&H and it's on the way.
I received a number of helpful hints when I asked about buying a used or a refurbished d750. It was a couple hundred dollars more than the used but the shutter count is only 1783 so it should last me as long as I can pick it up. Now to scratch up some green to get an FX lens. The 50mm and 90mm work but I really like a zoom. Saves walking back and forth. Thanks for your help.
I shall not attack you, you are correct other than I accepted their offer of a card, complied with their conditions and asked for the benefits they promised to induce me to get the card. If I promise to sell you this Nikon d300s sitting on my desk for $100 dollars less than B&H, then you are going to expect me to send you the camera are you not? And we haven't even met. BTW it is for sale.
LFingar: Yep you are absolutely correct. I went to SA 2.5 years ago and it was, without any reservation, the best photo shoot I've been on. That's why I wanted to go back! And on insurance companies, TriX, I've been with USAA since my first car in 1958. And any claims have been just as you described, no problems in 61 years and counting. Told you I was an old fogey.
LFingar: Yep, I've used the travel insurance companies. This was the first trip I've had to cancel. As I said, Alliance paid with no problem and I just thought I would save $382 and use this card "benefit". Even us old fogies make a mistake every now and then. Once. Dr says I can travel in the states now but don't book South Africa again anytime soon.
Since retirement I've been able to travel and enjoy photographing many of the places one reads about, lots of fun. One of the benefits offered by the Chase credit card is a refund of ticket cost in the event of a medial cancellation if you used their card to purchase your ticket. At my age the insurance cost was $382 so it looked good to use the advertised card benefit. We applied and received the card. Then when my cardiologist grounded me, I filed a claim for $2100 with the documentation. That was in August 2018 and it is now February 2019 and I'm still going back and forth with them. On 6 occasions they wanted more documentation which I supplied. But, each filing takes at least 10 days or more to get an answer and when I would inquire after two weeks, they wanted more documentation. Finally in early January they "settled" the claim and sent me a check for $100. Yes, one hundred. More calls and a verbal admission they had made a mistake and he would fix it and email me that afternoon. He didn't. 5 more calls until today and it seems that the payee isn't Chase but a third party and THEIR correspondence didn't correlate. They have been waiting 2 weeks for Chase to answer them to clear up the discrepancy. They couldn't pay until that was cleared up. Another promise, that they will email me this afternoon. Anybody want to take a bet on that! Guess what credit card I'm going to cancel as soon as I see the refund! BTW, the other ticket which I bought and paid for with coverage from Alliance through Delta Airlines, paid me in less than 6 weeks. And I think they are the third party for Chase, based on what's on the Chase web page.
dsmeltz: I think you have the best argument for refurbished. I also like the suggestion to wring it out when I get it and verify everything is as it should be. Again, thanks to all for your input. RMJ
Goodness, how did we get from refurbished cameras to Sears going under?
Thanks again for your replies. The UUG group is certainly a good reference place to check. FYI, I've ordered a refurbished 750 from Nikon. Just waiting for the BBT.
Yes but when did you last see a Nikon d750 at a garage sale? You pays your money and takes your chances. And the big companies are just as bad as the back alley fellow, I had a medical cancellation of a trip that was covered by the card benefits. After 4 months and lots of calls and document emails, they paid me $100.00 on a $1600 claim. After another month they say they made a mistake and will get back with me. That was two weeks ago and now "Next Tuesday". Oh well.
To all the above, thank you very much for your input. I looked at most of the places mentioned and keep going back to Nikon. A couple of hundred bucks more but based on the repair they did on my 500, I'll probably go there. Life is great, go take a picture of it!
What has been your experience with refurbished cameras from Nikon vs used from Adorama? Specifically a d750.
Good to know because these printers will die. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th and either gave the ink away or just pitched it since it never fits in the new printer.
