one suggestion i'd like to make, in addition to all the great information you've already received, is the use of an Ott Light.
jewelers use these lights to photograph fine jewelry. the Ott replicates sunlight, so this might be of some assistance to you, indoors. they make floor standing and desk top units.

Thank you both for your quick replies! Will take some shots in the next few days and check it out. Would most likely go for the 35mm for my camera's, but since I am just going to try this out, I'll give it my best shot!

i'm late to your post, but would like to assure you that of all the 50mm lenses Nikon have made, the little old plain jane 50mm f2.0 beats the pants off all the others. i don't believe you will be unhappy. good luck!

Nguyen,

You are sure to have opened up a hornets' nest with that provocative question. I have owned a number of cameras over the years, Nikon, Canon, Leica, Hasselblad, Minolta and presently have 3 Nikons, a Canon point and shoot and a Leica rangefinder. Some people will have nothing but Canon and others will have Nikon. Many other people have other makes of cameras and lenses and love them. To put it simply all cameras are of excellent quality but they have different features that some people think are more important than a feature another brand of camera does not have. You need to go to a camera store and check out different cameras to see which one feels good in your hand, has the features you like and will take the pictures you want it to do. For an example some of the point and shoot cameras of all brands will not let you take a photo of your children running across the lawn. The camera is not fast enough to catch their movement and your photo will not come out as you want it to. So you choose a camera which will allow you to do that.

I know others will chime in and offer their advice as well and I urge you to pay attention. Some will offer one brand and others will offer another. Remember though that the brand they select will not necessarily be the one you would select.

i agree with you, Dennis. there is no camera which will do everything. if there were, i'd not own 9 different camera systems and lenses! everytime i open my equipment closet i gag!!!

oh, heck, here i go again.
since i'm an old geek, i've run across some really great photographers, especially when i was young (yup, there were cameras then).
in grammar school, in my painting class, i was introduced to the vanishing point. so, years, and i do mean years, later, i happened to chance upon a large format photographer. we were talking about portraiture and landscape subjects. i asked him about the vanishing point in photography. and what he said has always stayed with me. and i do quote "walk around to the back of your subject and look at it, that's your vanishing point."
that has stayed with me all my life. sometimes i pay attention to it and sometimes i don't; like the parson's eggs.

okay, it's the old geek who does film.
i think your action was correct. but for a perhaps, different reason. as you were not acting in a professional capacity, then this was the right thing to, or not, do.
as a photojournalist, the job would be to get the photograph, regardless of the situation. ethics being situational, the job comes first. all photojournalists face situations which challenge morality or ethics; usually the photograph gets taken. the job of the photo editor involves sensibilities, so even here, ethics rarely come into play.
sigh, it's a tough and sad (for the most part) world and at the end of the day i'd flip my coin and hope the call is the right one.

okay, so i'm the new guy and let me muddy the waters even further.
nikon first came out with the 105 2.5 for the nikon rangefinder cameras. i use one with my s3.
and i agree the 105 2.5 is a wonderful lens either on the rangefinder or the nikon slr cameras. while nikon is not doing conversions, you might check with your local repairman. if he belongs to the society of photo technicians (SPT), he may be able to obtain the needed parts for an ai conversion.
i also have the 105 f2 dc lens (along with the 135dc) and it is a great lens also, but i use it for a very specific purpose. gotta remember, i do film, not digital, so be warned (heh, heh). my 105 2.5 nikkor is a 55 year old favorite and i would really recommend you continue to use it (especially on a nikon f!)

hi folks,
have been following the interesting dialogue on many subjects. from time to time i've felt the need to "throw my hat in the ring", so here i am. at 67, photographing since 12, only film, unable to relate to digital, but not hostile to it. i still love the smell of chemicals in my attic darkroom. shoot 35, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, 4x5 and 5x7. did fashion as a young man in hartford connecticut. now, long ago and far away. have used almost every camera out there, except the alpa 12 (bummer, but too expensive for me). have used digital when required - canon, nikon, fuji. still love schott and minolta glass and prime lenses. unable to use zooms - probably something genetic. let me know if there's anything else you want to know.
