Lots of talk, lately, about film coming back ... and so many have also indicated they miss Kodachrome. But, Ektachrome is still around ... so who here still soups it?

hell, yes - as easy as souping black and white negatives. however, one caveat - colour printing at home can be a frustrating exercise. all pros and associates i know send their transparencies out to be printed.

When I did darkroom work, I often processed and printed from transparencies or slides. Because of the expense of large scale, high quality, digital prints at the commercial labs (when larger than poster) I am thinking of trying to use a high definition digital projector instead of an enlarger to do the exposure and do the darkroom processing of the large print. The size of the enlarger needed is also a consideration since I am able to get a wider spread at shorter distance with a projector. Using the projector would allow post processing to be used and a final product delivered with much higher effectiveness rather than burning/dodging and spot color corrections during paper exposure. Since in PP software, it is also often possible to flip the color to negative, should probably also be able to print on regular paper for printing negatives.

Not sure of a couple of things though - color balance of the projector using various high intensity bulbs and color calibration for the photopapers. I think I could set up a color profile in lightroom and refine it with trial and error but still don't remember enough about the paper requiring a specific K value.

Has anyone tried to use a projector to replace an enlarger in the darkroom ?

no - i use a zone VI enlarger for my 5x7 negatives and a beseler 23cII for all other formats.

We are headed for Botswana and S. Africa in Oct.-Nov. for 3 weeks. I have a D 850 and a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 with a Nikon 2X telconverter. I am considering renting a nikon 80-400 4.5-5.6. The weight is about the same and filter size are both 77mm. The reviews seem to agree that in the 300-400mm range the 80-400 is soft. The 2x converter brings the f2.8 to 5.6 which is where I would be with the 70-400. Which would you prefer?

i would not use anything beyond 150-200mm in africa. not needed.

Is there a Nikon Macro lens that is the BEST?

the 200 f4 seems to be the choice of most macro photographers. and that is due to its focal length. all other things being equal, any one of them will do an excellent job.

indeed the old, ancient technology, out of date "sunny 16" rule.

Been looking for a new Canon T7I for a few months now. Lots of websites and Ebay. Just need the body as I have an older T3I with 3 lenses. Abe's of Maine has the new body for $595 which is much cheaper than anywhere else. AOM? Good dealer or a rip off?

think of abe's as something equivalent to the bubonic plague

I have the Canon EOS Rebel K2 SLR film camera in my sights. Used, of course. There are a lot of them at both Ebay & Amazon so -- if I go for this one -- I will have to do a lot of research to raise the odds of buying one in good condition.

There are 2 zoom lens options that interest me -- 28-80mm & 28-90mm. both f3.5-5.6 The spec say that the 80 uses a USM motor to drive the autofocus whereas the 90 uses a DC motor (I have no idea what this means.)

ADVICE PLEASE..... 😇
1- was this a really good camera in its day?
2- if so, which of the 2 zoom lenses should I go for?

look for a canon f1 in good condition - you will never regret it.

I am on the fence about this and would like to here what your plans or thoughts on this matter are.
Nikon has announced there mirrorless camera and as expected it will not be f mount, it will be a new mount, so in order to use your f mounts we will need an adapter, I for 1 am not a fan of adapters.
We all see this trend of the phase out of dslr for mirrorless cameras, it could take some years but regardless it may happen.
I am heavily invested in f mount and was wanting to add another lens, although I start to feel that it is a poor investment for the future of my photography, if I new Nikon was not going to eventually phase out the f mount for there new mirrorless I would be fine with it.
Do you think Nikon will keep both mirrorless and dslr,s in production in the future? I would appreciate input on this.
Thank you

while this latest digital iteration from nikon sounds great it is important to note that this will not be a full frame imaging device. the nikon f mount is made for cameras which can take all dslr mounts as well as all film bodies. it sounds as if this "mirrorless" device is a step down from nikon's flagship models.

Partly correct:
"The H1 camera used Fujinon manufactured lenses and prisms, thus departing from Hasselblad's long association with Carl Zeiss when it comes to lens manufacturing. The shutter in the lenses was still manufactured by Hasselblad as well as the body"

Speaks well of Fuji.

i do beg to disagree. the digital h series is outsourced by hasselblad to fuji, along with the lenses. both are then rebranded "hasselblad" upon delivery to sweden. fujifilm makes the exact same camera with their name for sale in the japanese market. we, who are cynical and own hasselblad v bodies, refer to the H series as "fujiblad".

Some Minolta lenses were made by Leitz & visa versa.

actually, from 1972 until minolta was sold to sony, minolta's imari glass works made and sold lenses to leica. mostly for the slr and long telephoto lenses. leica also used the minolta/imari glass in some of their rangefinder lenses, but that was never publicised and has been kept a proprietary secret to this day.

this is why minolta lenses for minolta slr bodies were always quite wonderful. also the minolta hi matic 7s rangefinder could produce gallery prints from slow black and white file with literally no grain. i still have and use that rangefinder for certain accounts.
