If I can spot the space station moving past, I want to see what can be shown with this lens.

You will see it easily when it comes over - but it does move pretty quickly... Check heavens-above.com for details of what satellites will be visible from your location. From a dark site, you will probably see a whole bunch.

To give a comparison, the ISS is brighter than Jupiter, but it will move across the entire sky in just a couple of minutes. You would think it was an aircraft with its landing lights on, except if it were, it would be close enough to clearly hear the engines. Because of the way the orbit works, it will appear to follow a curved line across the sky.

I have seen it quite a few times, and also the space shuttle when it was flying. On one occasion, I caught both, just a minute or so apart, as the shuttle had just undocked ready for return.

Interestingly, it is the one time you can see something with the naked eye which is some 250 miles away! I know astro subjects are much further, but how many objects are visible from just a few hundred miles?

I have never had a camera with me when I have seen it, but I would be interested in seeing any results you have...

Well done, not overcooked at all like so many do.

Yep, I agree. Nice job.

Once I get my tripod (supposed to come Tuesday), I will be trying my hand at some of these..

Thanks, I'll just be very careful, making sure all forms and conditions are met, then be patient! :-)

The biggest problem I have found with rebate offers is, sometimes they insist on the store filling out the papers too - there has to be a store stamp or something. If you get something online, that often doesn't get done...

With the reputation of B&H, I would not expect you to have any problems. If I had the money, I would be really tempted myself...

My experience with jobs has been this: The more money your job pays, the more your job sucks and the more it makes your life miserable.

Being a photojournalist is not a money making proposition; it has to be a labor of love.

I disagree with your premise... I drive a big yellow school bus, get abused by the kids, treated like c**p by the schools, and get paid a pittance for doing it. I wouldn't mind being this miserable, if I earned enough to indulge my hobbies more...

Here's what I did to capture this photo. I sat on the tail gate of my truck..just a short distance away from this nesting box...camera mounted on a mono pod with a cable release. I fixed the focus point right on the edge of the nesting box...I wish now I had moved the DoF just a little further back...and waited for the birds to fly into my DoF. Lens was a 200mm F4 macro at 1/1000 sec set at F7.1 iso400...and almost same sky condition as you had...just takes practice...and patience is all.

Great image!

Having shot with film for so many years, I find it hard to go above 400 ISO. Fast is where it's at! I'm taking donations for my next fast lens! A little help here? Anyone?

I too used film for eons... One of the things I was taught in the military, though, was to shoot HP5 (400 ASA) rated instead at 25,000 ASA, and spend *hours* with the film in the development tank to coax a response from it.

Surprisingly, provided you have the development stuff worked out right, the results can be spectacular. Our aim, of course, was to get 'sneaky' pictures of people doing things they shouldn't be doing, but just using the technique in a night-time street scene could produce some very 'moody' shots.

Dishwasher would be more consistent but the photojournalist would be more fun. So, more money or more fun.....

Welllllll.... That is only true if you like taking photographs! Granted, everyone reading this probalby does, but does everyone?

Just imagine - the soapy feel of a squeaky-clean plate; the fun splashing around in all those suds; the deep sense of satisfaction when you finally get all the grease scrubbed off that pot; the - oh, never mind. If you don't have it, then you wouldn't understand it...

Nice! I played around with IR film a bit, back in the days of the dinosaurs...

Yeah, I am afraid that I don't care much for the sky either. I do, however, love the foreground in the processed version.

This image of Earlene Yazzie one of my Native American friends was taken this past weekend at Monument Valley at a place in the back country called "Big Hogan" I lead a workshop consisting of 27 people per workshop two weeks in a row in Monument Valley. We managed through the gracious donations of my participants to supply them with over 500 lbs. of dog food and they made enough money through the sale of jewelry and the photo events we did to feed their sheep and horses for over two months. I have been shooting pro for years but nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping my Native American friends
This image of Earlene Yazzie one of my Native Amer... (show quote)

Nice pic... This would make a great selective colour shot too, B&W, with just the red of her outfit...

In May I was driving West on Rt 17, a wonderfully scenic road across the Southern Tier of New York state. Pulled off onto a side road where I thought chances of finding blooming phlox might be good. While scanning he roadside ditches I almost passed this farm...and the sky. Backed up, set up the tripod and made exposures as the clouds moved and morphed for almost a half hour.
Liked his one. Only a few power lines cloned out.
C&C please. No manipulations; thanks.

I love 'cloudscapes' in general, and you have done a great job with this one! I would (possibly) second the opinion that the furrows could do with a bit of a boost, but this is a great shot.

At the Newport Beach Fashion Island Shopping Center I had an opportunity to photograph a fountian. Up for critique.

Normally, I am a big fan of the 'slowed-water' look, but I am not sure it works for me with a fountain... The long exposure may have been dictated by other things, but I think I would have tried to keep the water looking more 'natural', and not let it turn into 'milk'.
