I have just bought a nikkor 18-70mm DX lens for my d3300 camera,it has no vibration reduction on it.
I like to shoot landscapes, my question, has anyone got experience with this lens?, I like to shoot handheld so I may struggle a bit, I believe the lens was originally the kit lens for a Nikon d70.
I have not yet taken any photo's with it.

It’s my walkabout lens of choice. At 70 mm it’s only about the equivalent of a 105mm in 35mm terms.

Nice resolution, corner to corner sharpness, and minimal chromatic fringing due to its relatively short range.

You should be able to hand hold it if you keep the shutter speed at 1/125th or above.

Good luck!

It’s an oldie but a goodie.
The old rule of thumb (for 35mm film cameras) is to keep the shutter speed at or higher than the focal length. You have an aps-c sensor, so go 1.5 or twice the focal length. Your mileage may vary.

I have the Nikon AF-P 18-55mm that has VR. I personally don't think it is necessary to have VR on a lens having a focal length up to 70mm. Film cameras lenses didn't have any VR at all, and photographers took great photos. I do believe lenses that have a focal length up to 300mm and over does have an advantage of having VR though.

The shutter speed rule of thumb is to not hand hold the camera with a shutter speed slower than the lens focal length. Remember: to include the crop factor. Full Frame 50mm would be no slower than a 1/50 sec. That same lens on a APS-C would be 1/75 sec. I personally can no longer hold a camera steady below 1/125 sec. I prefer VR but learned photography in the 60-70s and in those days I trained myself to hold a camera down to 1/25 sec. Hope this helps..

Be assured that the 18-70 f3.5-4.5 lens is going to surprise you with its quality. It is considered an old lens but it has what many other kit lenses do not and that is it is not f5.6 at the extreme focal length and the rear element is sealed against the environment.
I have used it for many different subjects including landscape photography. 18mm is like near 28mm when using a camera with a sensor similar in size to a 35mm negative and that is pretty much what many photographers need as a wide angle. On the 70mm side it will behave with a cropped sensor as a 105mm making it a decent lens for portraits and many landscape shots.
The little lens is sharp. Because it has no VR (no big deal for me) your minimum shutter speed should be 1/125sec. when using the lens and if light allows, when not using a tripod, I would go 1/250sec. for even better results. Obviously, the lens shines when setting the camera on a tripod.
If you do your part the lens will reward you with excellent images.

If you tire of the NikKor, Sigma makes a nice affordable 17-70 2.8-4 OS ( VR) lens.

Had one on my D-70. Sharp lens that's also lighweight. I never found the lack of VR to be a problem.
