The real deal on the D500/D5000 is the focus system. Steve Perry released his book, "Secrets To The Nikon Autofocus System" and I've barely got into it,but if you have a Nikon D7100 or later model it should help to optimize wildlife photography in particular. I have spent much time the last few months working with the system and it is top shelf!

Thanks....don't shoot wildlife, but this should help with the event I have to do.

Last year I saw a You Tube video narrated by Matt Granger, discussing Nikon's Holy Trinity of Lenses. They were the Nikon 14-24mm, the 24-70mm, and the 70-200mm f2.8. All three of these lenses are very expensive, and are best suited for full frame camera bodies. So, for all you Nikon DX owners, what would be your personal Holy Trinity of Lenses? It can be third party selections, FX or DX lenses. Select three only please. A mixture of zoom or primes lenses. are OK.

Tokina 11-16 f2.8
Nikon 16-80 f2.8-4
Nikon 70-200 f2.8

Plus Nikon TC-14E III

For lens speed and focal length range.

Don’t waste your money..., it looks like in a year we’re all gonna be shooting Sony ML anyway, and Nikon may well be gone!!!!!

Nikon 18-140mm sharp and clear nice colors "walk around" lens
Sigma 17-50mm sharp, fast for indoors
Tokina 11-16mm just got this took a few shots think I'll have lots of fun with it
Nikon 50mm 1.8 for portraits
Nikon 75-300mm an old push pull zoom, metal and heavy with a built in tripod collar I snagged for $99. I tried out both the 55-300 and 70-300 and my wife bought me a 55-200 the 75-300 is better than all of them and it auto focuses on my D7100

There's so many active topics, those that have been dead for a year+ fail that test. A best approach would to be to start a new thread of your own with some new thoughts, even on an old subject ...

As others have said, the best glass out there is made for FX bodies. For my D7200 DX body the 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens is hard to beat for IQ in a DX general purpose zoom. I am also pleased with a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 for landscapes. The DX lens I use most, however, is the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3.
