I'll be driving to/from Phila. to Montreal along I-87 in a few weeks and will have my camera with me. I will have some time to stop if there is anything worth stopping for in upstate NY?

"Worth stopping for?" The Hudson Valley is on beautiful area. People from here tour the Rhine and upon return say it's more beautiful here. You have the Catskills to the west and the Hudson Highlands to the east. West Point. FDR's home in Hyde Park. We used to live in Philadelphia (which we enjoyed greatly) but have found the Hudson valley to be superb re beautiful scenery.

Ausable Chasim is about 10 min off 87 (Northeast along 9) at exit 34. I have two shots in my gallery https://mymindseye.us/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2 or you can Google Map it. I found it accidentally when coming from Port Kent YEARS ago (film camera). I made a U-turn to go back and see it.

You've got to be kidding. Anything worthwhile in the Hudson Valley??
West Point, Washington's Headquarters (Newburgh), FDR & Eleanor (Hyde Park), CIA (Culinary Institute, Hyde Park), Bear Mountain Bridge, Storm King Mountain & Highway, Walkway over the Hudson, Storm King Art Center.................................

Some people just want to be spoon fed and there are many that love the opportunity to spoon feed. Versa Visa, some love to do the leg work themselves.

I had the same experience when we got off the ferry headed to pa. As we passed my wife said you gotta see this. So we turned around and went back. It was well worth the stop. I plan to go back one of these days. It is well worth the stop.

There is a reason why some of the most collectable, and expensive, paintings have been painted by the Hudson River artists. Simply some of the most beautiful landscape photo opportunities in the country. You could spend a lifetime and not run out of possibilities

On 87, nothing. Just off 87 almost anything you can imagine.

In all fairness, sometimes it may help to know what's along the route instead of flying past something or missing it entirely. Like I never knew Ausable Gorge was along 9, or what it was, even if I saw it on a map.

It would help to know what you are interested in. Otherwise the entire Shawangunk mountain range, all of the historic homes of the Hudson Valley. The views along the Hudson Valley immortalized by the many painters known as the Hudson Valley School. The Culinary Institute of America.

I mean you could spend several months exploring everything along that route.

The High Peaks Region in the Adirondack Preserve are pretty stunning - as is Au Sable Chasm not far from Keene, NY. The western shore of Lake Champlain, Lake George, Garnet Hill, Lake Placid, and various wilderness areas an preserves in and around the land to the west of the Northway (I 87 north of Albany). Mt Marcy, in the High Peaks Wilderness, is home to the headwaters of the Hudson River. A little further down the road and a bit north and east of Lake Placid you'll find Whiteface Mt, a mountain which has a top quarter mostly above treeline. On the way to Whiteface there is High Falls Gorge - very picturesque when the water is running. And this is just a very very short list of stuff to see up there.

Haha. We got off the ferry and were heading to Thousand Islands (via 81).
I wonder how many people pass it and say WOW and make a U-turn??

Note to self: If you ever visit Ontario, Canada, do not ask big-guy for advice on photo ops.
