Minor glitches after Win 10 Apr 2018 update

I've noticed a number of comments about the latest Win 10 update, and thought I'd add mine to the mix: I don't print very often, so my el cheapo Canon Pixma MG2520 stays powered off most of the time and was in fact off when the update was installed 4 days ago and up to today. I wanted to print a .pdf medical info release form I'd downloaded, but when I hit the print button I got a "printer is offline" message. This happened both when I tried to print it while online, and when I opened it from the downloads folder while offline. Same message. So I thought about it awhile, after first looking around the Microsoft forums site (and getting buried). I guess about 15 or 20 minutes had gone by from the time I first started trying to print; the printer was powered on, paper loaded and ready to go the whole time. So right about then the printer starts clicking and running the cartridges into position, etc., exactly like it always does, followed by it printing out 2 copies of the form, one for each attempt I'd made online and offline. I'm glad I didn't start deleting and re-installing and such. Maybe the system had to get re-acquainted with the printer after the update was installed or something like that (?). I think before I send this I'll turn the printer off, turn it back on and see if it will print something right away or if this extended-delay time is something I'll have to live with.....

Well, I just put the printer thru its paces and it worked like it always has (and no delays!), so I'm happy. What do you all think of the "needed to get re-acquainted" theory? It seems to fit, though I can't say I've seen anything like that in almost 27 years of computer-using.

If Windows was not aware of the printer after the update it would have never printed. I suspect the printer itself was not reporting status correctly, or was in some type of sleep mode that it finally came out of.

You stated the reason for me when you said the printer was off during the upgrade. I suspect the printer needed to communicate with windows and set up the driver when you turned it on finally. That's what I would have expected to happen... re-initializing of the driver when W10 sensed the printer being added to the mix.

although many people suggest unhooking peripherals, I leave everything on, or turn it on. That way drivers get initialized as part of the upgrade process. That is one area where Windows 10 shines for my experience. Of course if your printer had been truly incompatible, then you would have needed to investigate drivers that work properly.

I jumped into the Windows Insider program, and have upgraded 75-100 client PC's to Windows 10. I have had a handful of problems since before the original rollout of W10 (Windows 8.1 was never so forgiving) and intervening years.

It's been the best Operating System of any Windows since Windows 3.1 and of all the Windows OS I have taught at the local college, since 1992.

Just a suggestion for the future.
If you have a problem with 'anything' not working properly, a usual final suggestion is to shutdown ones computer and restart it.
This may not help with the latest version of Windows 10 as to assist a faster startup, Windows saves a lot of the settings when you use the 'shutdown' option.
I read somewhere, the best option now is to do a 'Restart'.
The 'Restart' option doesnt save anything so you get a clean start up.
Cheers

Thanks to kd7eir and TonyP for your comments. As a matter of fact, the old restart/reboot routine is my customary first response to this sort of thing, and I was on the point of doing just that when the printer belatedly started working; it has since done its job immediately with no delays or other glitches. Win 10 came loaded on this just-a-few-weeks-old but it seems like a good OS to me so far.

Actually, I am not sure that this is correct. Whenever (and *however*) I restart my PC, it comes up with IE open, and reopens all the windows which were there before shutting down. The annoying thing is that it will restart any youtube videos in all those windows... This always happen if I do a restart, but we had thunder rolling through as I was getting ready for bed, so the machine was shut down and left off overnight. Switched it on this morning and headed to the bathroom, then came back out to a cacophony of voices from the system!

The only time I can remember it *not* doing this, is when the restart includes installing updates, I think. Given that windows is storing at least this amount of info during its off/on cycle, I am not sure just *how* you can be sure to get a clean start... Oh, this is w10 pro 64-bit, for reference.

Well, it works for me on my Dell Precision M4800 64 bit system, and my wifes HP 64bit laptop.
On our computers, we get a message (on restart) that Windows is closing all programs. Then the option to continue, or not.
The only way Im aware of, that those programs can open on start up, is if you have them loaded in your start up menu.
That would do it.

The advice I gave previously, most likely came from here https://www.howtogeek.com/
I find this newsletter quite informative and,in my opinion, pretty authoritive.

There is an option for a "fast startup" on my Windows 10 laptop. As soon as I enter my password it boots up immediately without loading any windows in memory. All the old windows have been dumped on the previous shutdown.

I don't have any browsers in my start up. Even if I *had*, though, I have never known any version of windows open a browser with tabs remembered from before a shut-down. This one has done it since new...

I had a similar, but different problem. After the update none of my scanners A3 and A4 (metric sizes) would work. Totally uninstalled the Epson V600 with Revo uninstalled then reinstalled using the Epson V600 CD. Then everything else worked.

Someone somewhere said to hold the shift key while shutting down and when you start it up again it will be free of the items it normally would hold and delay the start up time.

The Windows update theory is quite possibly correct.

I am in Australia, the opposite side of the world, and had the same problem in April. My cheapo ($80), but trusty, laser printer started to misbehave in April. It was so damned annoying as it would finally print anywhere between 10 minutes and 10 hours after the print instruction. Restart of the printer and two laptops did not cure the problem. Tough decision to make as I have five spare cartridges but waiting until the next day for prints, is beyond my patience level.

Upset my wife and bought a new printer ($220) and, you guessed it, "old trusty" is back to working just fine.
