Canyon de Chelly Tours

Can anyone recommend a tour operator that best accomodates photographers? The tours I've seen on-line are either at 9:00 am, mid-day or 4:00 pm, not good times for photography. Also, would a 4-hour tour be a better choice and do the tours go to essentially the same sites?

You might try Deswood Yazzie in Chinle. www.arizonacanyonjeeptours.com. We were fortunate to be escorted by the very respected Sylvia Watchman. She had us in the canyon from early morning until well after light loss. Her story telling was superb, as was her knowledge of the canyon. Much more there than meets the lens. Showing some respect for the ways of the Navajo in their home will open some doors closed to others. The ancestors are around every corner.

I can tell you not to use Antelope House tours. The owner, Adam Teller gives tours with historical knowledge but has no idea what photographers want or need. Early morning and late afternoon works best.

Thank you. I have contacted Mr. Yazzie to see if we can get an early am half day tour as the light should be more favorable then. I'm thinking of doing the hike after lunch and then the drive at the end of the day on the way to Monument Valley. Does that sound like a good plan to you?

Took tour with Adam Teller last week. Excellent tour guide. Stopped whenever I wanted for photos. Took 4 hour tour which was perfect. Let me start st 2 pm which was also perfect. Make sure to do two rim drives and take 11/2 mile hike down to White House ruins. On way. Ack to Sedona stopped at Petrified Forest National Park. What a wonderful trip

Thanks; we're doing Sedona, then Petrofied Forest, then Canyon de Chelly, then Monument Valley, then Arches, Bryce and Zion. Will only have one day in Canyon de Chelly, so I'm thinking of trying to get an early morning 4-hour tour, then the hike, then the south drive. Sound good?

South Drive is best in afternoon. Great lighting in late afternoon. Two hours without the hike. North Rim best in morning-took about an hour.

How are the rides my wife has a back problem. I thought about the tours but thought my bumps and thing might be too much for her. Didn't want her to be in pain.

It is bumpy for a small part of the tour. Probably less in front seat. Dirt roads definitely not smooth

My wife too has a severe back problem. She suggests your wife bring a back pillow and limiting the tour to four hours or less. These are not roads as we know them and can be rough. The same goes for Monument valley tours.
