So do I. Met some folks last month at the Canyon who arrived by train. They didn't mention any problems. Good luck.

Have friends who spend 3 days and 2 nights there every few years and they love it. Never had a problem. We are talking of joining them next year.

No issues with the train. However, the Grand Canyon has MANY view points and you will be limited in your photographic opportunities without a car. Especially if the light is diverse and spectacular. There are as many moods in the Grand Canyon as ants on an ant hill. You may be lucky and get there when there is a massive thunderstorm and catch that one perfect shot; or the perfect sunset. Regardless, it is a wonderful experience and enjoy your time.

Unless he's done this before, having a car merely allows one to crawl back and forth in traffic. When were there fifteen years ago, we arrived by car, but did most of our travel via shuttle bus.

Never by Train or in Summertime, Winter and car are the best, just think Grand Canyon >100 visitors 9 times over and NO crowd, no leaves on trees, wonderful wildlife and canyon shots.

One problem about winter is that the north side of the Canyon is closed...or at least all facilities are.

Hubby and I went to the GC two years ago in the middle of May. I had never seen it and wanted to see it before I died (IM 70, but in good health now) I loved it and all I could say mostly was "wow" The crowds were not bad at all and the weather was great, some beautiful clouds during the day, and we drove to the north end (about 300 miles) and spent the day. The North was more beautiful and much less crowded. I did not get any sunrise or sunset pics though. But got many, many beautiful shots IMO. I had a new camera - a Canon T5i which I took most (well all) pictures on automatic as I did not know how to expose on my own. I have learned a lot about it in the past 2 years. :-)

I'm A railroad nut. For the past 5 years I have traveled on all the main lines . I like to photo shoot out the train window.Have wanted to do this trip for a long time. I spend months planning cost, stops.hotels, points of interest. Most of the time is spent in the observation car and sleep in the seat.in the coach car. The best thing I found is using Rail pass, save a bundle.

Then stay at the Posada in Winslow, AZ. Associated with the Harvey Girls and many stay there to catch the trains going by in photos day and night.

sept. at the Grand Canyon is beautiful and the train from Williams to the G/C is a great trip.as far as getting around to the view points on the suttle you will not have any problems at all.You can get on and off whenever you want too. They run all day from the vistors center to all view points about every 30 mins. I hope you have a great trip. IF you are a triple A member they do have a great package for the G/C train trip. IT includes 2 nights in Williams and one night in a hotel at the G/C.
