Hello everyone! I have been following your posts for a few months and have learned enough to know, I have a lot to learn! I will be going on a trip to Vancouver Island and will be without electricity for 3 days on a kayaking trip to view Orca whales. Do you have suggestions for not having electricity? Have any of you used alternate portable electricity devices to recharge your camera (yes, I will have more than 1 battery with me) and download to a laptop? Also, because I have learned to shoot RAW, how many cards would you suggest? I will have more simple questions in another post but one step at a time. BTW- Thank you for all the knowledge you have shared on here. I have learned from reading your posts that the best answers come from those that are experienced.

Lynn, Will you have access to a car?
If you you can use this inverter to charge your camera batteries with an external charger.

Welcome to our forum. Have a great trip and capture some great orca whales on your camera.

Based on Lynn's post above, an inverter works great but remember to run the car you attach it to periodically. I killed my car battery forgetting that little tip once before.

No access to any cars. We will be kayaking on the ocean and camping on islands.

Here's what I use when I'm off on a commission where Sunshine is likely (so, NOT Washington State, or anywhere in the UK!)?

Note, this is an emergency measure, for my iPhone & iPad; I don't think anything easily portable replaces a number of fully charged camera batteries...

Don't know what camera you have so it's hard to answer. I have a Canon 5D and would be comfortable with 2 batteries for 3 days without recharging. As for memory cards - again depends on the camera and the capacity of the cards. My raw files are about 70mb each but I use at least a 64gb card so that's a lot of pictures. But if you are going to shoot in burst mode and shoot hundreds a day it's hard to tell. Also keep in mind the biggest drain on your battery is not shooting pictures but looking at them on your screen. If you are going to do that each night on your camera that will really suck your batteries dry.

I have a canon EOS t3i - which takes decent photos. I have 2 stock lens and a Sigma lens 17-50mm-f28-ex-dc-os-hsm. I am looking to upgrade my 75-300mm stock lens. I have read a couple of posts on here about the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM Lens but then read a review online. I don't know if I should post it here or not but I can quote part of it "I replaced the lens with much cheaper 70-300mm F3.5-5.6. Although plastic built it is lighter and the image quality SO much better. IS works effectively. I replaced the $650 DO with a refurbished lens from Canon USA for $260 and could not be more pleased." I was going to upgrade my camera but thought upgrading lenses would be a better investment at this time.

Take a look at Amazon & search for portable charging station. There are a couple that look like they would work but you might have a problem with weight if you don't have a fixed base camp. You may need to lay in a supply of camera batteries and charge them all before leaving.

Ii generally, download them into my laptop first. I almost never review them on the display. And yes, I do shoot in bursts.

I have seen some recharging units that recharge on solar energy. I like that option for here in Texas but I wonder about Vancouver Island. It is a rainforest.

I have a 64mb and a 32 mb card. I know there are better cards for photography but don't know how to determine which cards are better. Definately looking for suggestions on this as well.

Yes. Camping on an island off Vancouver Island will be quite an experience. Maybe 3 batteries!

Lynn, welcome to the Hog.
Assuming you will have some sun, possibly not, You can get a small solar charger that might help. I've not used one but they probably charge very slowly.
Find out if you can get a battery charger that will run off a USB. If so, Costco sells a car battery jumper that is only about 1"x1.5"x 6" and has a USB port. Bigger and heavier are the AC batteries such as the smaller Paul Buff Vagabond.
I'd leave the computer home!! Good luck
