What is a good battery grip for the D-7200?

be careful on those "Nikon" grips on e-bay. box says Nikon as do the grip but I don't think they are really oem. 95.00 as opposed to 250.00 for a new grip. I use a Neewer grip for my D7200. works as it should except it will always use the cameras battery first even tho I set the camera to use the grip battery first. I red this may be because I use a Nikon battery and a third party battery. I ordered another Nikon to see if it's the issue. the oem grip is built like a tank. I had one on a D300 and these third party grips are nowhere near the quality, but if you are not hard on your gear, they are ok for the price.

I would use the camera without the grip first to determine if you need the additional battery back up. Personally I prefer NOT to use a battery grip as it adds considerable weight and bulk to the camera. I have an extra battery fully charged at all times in my bag, but rarely need it even when shooting for a full day. If you shoot often in live view and/or with the on camera flash, you will obviously use more juice.

My D-7200 should be her on Tue. I've been looking around at different battery grips and batteries for it. What is a good one and what is the feelings on third party batteries? here is one I see on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Digital-Replacement-Batteries-Vertical/dp/B00D8ISLHK/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8&th=1

A good one would be the one that Nikon makes for it, it couldn't be any simpler!

Try B&H for the Nikon version I have heard of problems with off brand versions. Beside why bother? I use two Nikon D7200's for work and keep a single battery in a vest pocket. My batteries never seem to go below 1/2 power even during the longest football game where they are being pushed hard to work the auto focus. Cheapest is to buy one extra battery and remember to swap it out every so often with the other battery to keep it in use and charged. Turn the camera on its side to shoot vertical is not that difficult to reach the trigger button. Besides the battery usually requires two standard camera batteries or at the most a few penlight batteries which in the long run cost more money. my sport shots in a day sometimes come to a thousand shots then the focus speed lags. Then I change batteries.

I tried a third party grip once. It worked fine for a while, then the insert for connecting to a tripod came loose and was unrepairable. I switched to a nikon grip and have never had a problem. I know the nikon brand is more expensive, but i feel they are worth the extra expense. If you are never going to attach your camera to a tripod or other accessory, then you may get by, but if you use a tripod, wrist strap, or other such attachments, go with nikon. As for the battery, the D7200 will use third party batteries, but if you ever decide to upgrade your camera, the D500, and probably any cameras newer than the d500 will not accept third party batteries.

I have the Pixel Battery Grip from Amazon. Got it for my 7200, it works fine and now works fine on my d500. Two for one. I'd only use Nikon batteries, I had a 3rd party battery, once. Stick with Nikon.

Spend the money once, get the Nikon, you will end up with it anyway.

I have the Neewer grip for my 7100 and have been using it for the past two years with no problems. Along with non OEM batteries. As far as cost it was a third the price of a Nikon one. If you are on a budget you can save a lot and get the same results. It is an accessory not a body or lens. All you are paying for is the name and the name does not make it better.

And if the third party grip fails at the tripod mount with your camera and expensive lens attached, which all hit concrete?

In my opinion, you cannot beat the OEM Nikon version of the grip, it is built like a rock, like the camera.

I have had a couple of 3rd party grips for my D7100, and the OEM, while more expensive is absolutely the best. No issues, fits perfectly and looks the part.

BTW - one of my Neewer grips ended up with electrical issues, the camera was always flashing the green power on light when the camera was just sitting on the desk, like the battery was disconnecting... not one flash when an OEM grip was used.

As for batteries - you can't lose with oem Nikon batteries, but I have also used Wasabi and Vivitar batteries with no problems in my D7100.

How are you able to mount that to both the D7200 and the D500? The contact connections are in completely different locations and orientations

MB-D15 (D7200)
MB-D15 (D7200)...

MB-D17 (D500)
MB-D17 (D500)...

Exactly, that always worried me when I used a Neewer grip on my D7100, so much so I added an extra tether just in case... with the Nikon grip I did not use a tether - the Nikon grip is built like a tank with a magnesium skeleton like the camera... the Newer was plastic with a metal piece along the plastic bottom where the tripod mount was.

It's just not worth the risk. Some company could be putting anything into these grips, you have no idea what or how durable they may or may not be. You trust it to connect electrically to your expensive camera. Now if it's an established and trusted company that's one thing. But who are the other companies making these grips?

I was surprised it worked on both the 7100 and the 500. I just didn’t read the book, tried it and it worked.

Hello again. The first time I responded I was at the airport so as soon as I got to the motel I got out the 500 and the battery grip. Actually I thought maybe I got it mixed up but by golly, I’ve got the grip on the d500, stepped outside and took some vertical pictures with the BBF on the grip and everything works. I have no answer as to why it fits but it does and it works and if I was home I’d send you a picture. RMJ
