It sounds like you don't have much time in Escondido, though the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly named SD Wild Animal Park) is a great attraction, to get your money's worth, you need to spend at least a few hours there. Condor Ridge (in the safari park) is great to capture some bird photos, but at the cost of $54 to enter, plus $15 to park -- You might want to revisit when you have more time.

The Marshland next to Campland on The Bay is good for birding. Google Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve for more info. It is only 10 minutes from I-5.

Enjoy your visit!

pick up a copy of PhotoSecrets San Diego by Andrew Hudson it will show you everything in and around San Diego. The cost new is about $19.00 but IM sure you can find it on amazon for around $10.00. IT is also a good souvenir of the area. I hope you have a good trip.

I am from Laguna Beach and know all of the area quite well. I am going to recommend an ocean view scenario and a few landmarks. From north to south: near Torrance is Palos Verdes peninsula. Traveling Palos Verdes Drive will take you to many scenic sites on the cliffs for distant views. At low tide a walk down to the beach will reveal tidepools. Going south, Newport Harbor and peninsula where John Wayne and Rock Hudson had homes. Travel farther south to Laguna Beach, just west of Laguna Hills, where the lifeguard station at Main Beach in center of town is a classic. Great views from Las Brisas restaurant (also a great place for a margarita overlooking the ocean from their patio). Then drive up Temple Hills Dr. (from Pacific Coast Hwy just south of downtown) and drive to Top of the World and go to the park there and you will see views out to Catalina Island to the west and much of Orange County to the east.

No, just not as full as it usually is.

You are certainly welcome. My wife and i volunteered at the State Recreation Area on the West side of the sea in 2013 and 2014 and I learned a lot about the Sea. In fact the birds there reconciled my interest in photography enough that I went out and purchased a DSLR. The first Winter at the Salton Sea I took about 5000 shots in 3 months.

I'm not sure I would recommend the Salton Sea in April, it can get very hot there, however, it can be a wonderful and beautiful place, and there can be mega-photo opportunities.

I lived many years in So Cal, and agree with suggestions that have been made. If you don’t have time for the San Diego area, take a coastal route from Escondido back to Torrance for many scenic areas. For flowers check what is blooming at the Carlsbad flower fields. The San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park is in Escondido....a great place for animal shots. Wine Country north of Escondido is great in Spring. Have fun!

Coastal Route is US101, don't get sidetracked on Interstate 5 (It is part of your coastal route from San Diego area to Dana Point) which will take you through downtown LA!

You connect to 101 from I5 in Downtown LA. When you drive through Hollywood, and see the Hollywood Sign, wave. I'll wave back.

I second the recommendation on Las Brisas. There is an adjacent paved walkway with some great ocean views that we enjoyed a little over a year ago. Hermosa Beach is another really nice area to visit in the same area as mentioned by several people.

One thing to be aware of is there is traffic all the time, so try to understand the traffic flows and avoid the worst of it. You can get an idea by monitoring sigalert.com (select the area of concern) and note the worst traffic directions for where you want to go. Google Maps on you phone is another place to check. Enjoy your trip!

I'm going to southern CA (Torrence,Lagunia Woods, and Escondido) for six days at the end of April.
One night to a ball game in Anaheim, one day to a glass blowing class in Escondido.
Can I get some suggestions on places to go get some good photos in that area.
I'm traveling light,D5300 with Tamron 18-400,unless some one can tell me the necessity for a specific lens.
All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

At the long end, something like 80mm is OK but even 600mm is sometimes not enough so your 400mm is OK I would think. I think you might want to add a bit at the wide angle end.
