I want to thank Jederick for telling us about the hole at the base.

The hole was dynamited and cut into the base to store feed and salt licks for cattle.

A few miles north and on the other side of the road are several similar (though much larger) places that have been blasted and chiseled out of the rock. Families live in those places. Right now. Year 'round. And there's the one just the other side of the (Colorado) River where the crazy shopping cart lady used to live. But she got evicted.

Ha! No, the ones I mentioned are WAY more..... "basic"... than the one in your shot with its lawn and its sidewalk and all. Bottom line is, there's a number of places in this area where rock has been blasted out and been used as storage or residence. I don't have any shots of the nicest one around here --its kind of Frank Lloyd Rock-ish, actually--, but here's a shot of a view from that place's yard (as seen from across the River).

More like this one? The closer one looks, the more one sees for this cave house.

With all the grass, there must be a good water supply. And it looks like a modern house built using ancient walls. See the glass blocks, lots of light. And natural cooling with all the rock around. Very nice...
