I have a small Nikon Colorpix S9900 that I carry with me in my laptop carrier. I don't know if they still make them, but it takes fairly good photos. I use it for project sites, so, my demands are not too high... does a reasonable attempt at macro shots.

I love the Olympus omd line. The camera and lenses to get would be based on your budget and desire for quality but all are great.

I went with a Fuji X-T20 with the 27mm pancake sense. This allows me to take a couple of other lenses if it makes sense and the X-t20 provides a backup to my X-T2 when not traveling.

I'd check out the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200/TZ200

I preferred the Canon G1X Mk II because it was tested to be better in low light. The tests were probably accurate because the lens is somewhat faster, and it has larger pixels. It also has more zoom, but the higher resolution in the Mk III means you could possibly crop it and still retain as much resolution as the Mk II has. However, the Mk III is actually lighter weight and a tad smaller. And yes, the Panasonic LX 100 is also excellent and their ZS 100 is the most versatile due to having the most zoom, albeit it is not as good in low light. Pick your trade-off.

I use the Sony RX100m2 as my bridge Camera when traveling overseas and some days I’ll take it for the day trip and always get great photos, but zoom is a little short sometimes... best secondary shooter i’ve ever used... the current model version is a little pricey, but earlier models cost less and are still super...

When traveling by airplane, I need to keep my gear with me in a carry on backpack. I usually take my Olympus gear - OMD E M5II and my 12-40 f/2.8 lens. If my travels are more extensive and I will be away longer, or on a cruise, I may consider something even more compact, like an Olympus PEN series body, And take the 45mm f/1.8 and 14-42mm EZ lenses. If you are looking to purchase new, the Panasonic LX100 would be a great, super compact camera with fixed lens choice and B&H has some great deals on them right now.

I worry a little about not having much zoom to get shots of all those beautiful ceiling details, but the trade off in weight and discretion seem worth it. Now to pick which small camera will do the best job.

Are you kidding? You can get a superzoom bridge camera! It will not have the low light capability, but get you out farther than the biggest bazooka you can get for a fullframe DSLR!

I have the sony rx100m3......its brilliant...especially if you like street photography. High quality images and very good in low light. It also has a setting which takes 3 photos in succession in low light and stitches them together which works suprisingly well. I think you can picked used ones up at good prices second hand now.

Plus 4x zoom for reach 😀

Hi! I typically shoot with a Nikon DSLR (currently D5600), but am going to Italy in May and want something smaller and more discreet for street photography. I have seen some wonderful photos with the Sony RX100 v and wondered if anyone had any experience with them?

Regardless of which smaller camera becomes your final choice, make sure it has decent video capability. Some years ago my wife and I decided to grab mini 10-15 second videos as we "worked" the streets of distant places. Street corners, quaintness, and across the street happenings (to mention afew) added not only interest but ambience to our adventures. It led us to "see" more of the total picture of what was available. It opened our eyes to the things we missed in stills, and in come situations, we went out the following day to capture those. Just a thought.

I used a Sony RX100 m1 for three years as my "pocket camera" and was always fighting with it for one reason or another. Images were quite nice, but working with tihe camera was not fun. I tried several other cameras which were not as easily carried (Lumix LX100, Olympus Pen EPL-7, OM-D EM10 Mk II), or were worse than the Sony for handling/menu's (Canon G5X), and, strangely enough, ended up coming back to the RX100, but the Mk III that I bought used from KEH. It solved the problems I had with the Mk I and takes wonderful pictures too. I wish it had a little more zoom range, but I tend to use the small cameras more for interiors where the f1.8-2.8 lens makes more sense. Images from it are quite nice. It seemed strange to make that wide circle only to come back to the RX100 in a later flavor, but I got a good idea of what the others had to offer. Best of the others was the Olympus OM-D EM10 Mk II. Great little camera, just too big for pockets unless you're Paul Bunyon....

You can use the zoom feature for 280 mm digital reach, with surprisingly good photos!

I have used a TZ80 on a Baltic cruise. All shots were done in RAW, which the camera can do, and the results are very pleasing. Aside from my regular Canon, I think the TZ80 is an excellent 'pocket camera'.
