Making a little progress

They poured the concrete and set the anchors/bolts that will hold the two piers. I will be running two Atlas Pro EQ/AZ mounts. We have rain and cold (not freezing) so I will let the concret set for a week per their advice. But next week I will mount the piers and will have an open air observatory until the HOA approves outbuildings. From this location I have a 360 view of the sky from 15 degrees up. Progress on this has been slow.

Looking really good Ed.
Did you have to get permission to set you pier mounts? I have heard so many horror stories abou HOA’s.

Wow, that is great. Now if you can order up clear skies to go with it.

Can you turn your Vixon dew shield so it’s not upside down?

You are in South Carolina, so concrete curing time depends on weather. I poured a deck in California, where it is never below 72 Deg ( :-) ) and had to wait 1 week before doing tile. Your time may vary depending.

And, I frickin hate HOAs.

No - I just rolled the dice on this one....but no one can see it unless they come in the back yard so I think I am good!

Ditto on the HOA hate - you are absolutely right about the concrete. We have decided to wait until next Tuesday at the earliest. We have no worthwhile skies for a week anyway...so why rush it.

I am shooting an album cover for Justin Moore and Dylan Scott this Saturday and Sunday - they are touring together and Justin liked what I did for Patti Labelle. I am thinking about taking that money and buying an AstroPhysics mount and a 14 inch RC....... if you don't follow country music - chances are you wouldn't know who they are. So in a twisted sort a way, I will be shooting a couple stars this weekend. I have "Three Dog Night" and "Gordon Lightfoot" (thought he was dead probably) coming up this spring. It's a great break from shooting sports all of the time.

I think I already shared Patti's pic - pardon if I did!

Very nicely shot.
I shoot performers whenever I can but most concerts now will not allow cameras in.
We have had a number of performers performing during the summer in Albuquerque for the last several years.

Very Cool, Ed!
I was beginning to wonder what was going on with the Piers.
And quite right about the curing. It lets the concrete harden and gain strength.
What concrete work I've been involved with in my life, we kept the concrete damp while it set and cured.
My Dad would lay down burlap, soak it with a sprinkle from a hose, then keep it damp for several days.
Let's the concrete cure a tad slower, and it would be harder, and stronger.

Are you sure you have enough room between them to swing a couple of Hubble sized telescopes for 'future proofing'?

HOA's... I flatly refuse to ever tolerate some biddies telling me what I can or cannot do in my own damn yard.
And I imagine 32 gallon domes would be frowned upon....

Yeah. It makes the image upside down in your refractor.

Picky poo!

I am allowed to go to the stage and shoot the first 2 or 3 songs for most performers. Some will let you shoot the entire concert - Oak Ridge Boys come to mind...as did the Beach Boys. But once I get my shots and I don't need three songs to do that...i usually leave. If the band has a "meet and greet" after the concert ...I am usually ask to stay and take candids of the VIP fans with band members. Now this can be a wild event. This weekend, we have been scheduled to shoot images for their upcoming album and tour website. The Bon Secours Arena hires me to do all of their concerts which is good and bad. There have only been a few bands that I really enjoyed - even with earplugs the music is deafening, especially when you are standing in front of the stage (speakers). Stevie Nicks, Nora Jones, and James Taylor have been my favorites.

Some really great work on the mounts Ed.
