The A-1 was a nice camera in some ways but I found that it lacked the durability and reliability of earlier, all-mechanical Canons, such as the FT, FTb, and F-1. Also, it lacks a mechanical back-up shutter speed. So, when the battery dies, it becomes a paperweight. I owned one for a few years in the 1990s. I bought it used and found that it had the Canon "wheeze," which required a $75 service periodically to get rid of. When Canon stopped supporting the old FD system in the late 1990s, I traded all my Canon gear for two Nikon FM2ns. The FM2s are still going strong almost 20 years later with virtually no service.

The Canon "wheeze" huh, Adm ... ? Care to elaborate, further?

Looks like you got out just in time, then, huh, Adm?

FM2s are a hardy little camera - that's for sure ...

Congratulations on having made that successful jump, then, there, Adm ...

24 pages of reminiscences - thats pretty good. So far as best is concerned, subjectivity must creep in. Or is it down to advances in design - for example, Pentax K mount over Pentax screw mount?

There's bound to be many more, too, Del ... I've only yet return-commented on the first six pages ...

Sure, Del ... all opinions are subjective ... but so far, the consensus seems to be in favor of the Nikon F ... by a comfortable mile, over all else ....

Pentax - notably, the Spotmatic, and K1000 models - come in second ... now the first is definitely screw-mount, but the second is Pentax K-mount, I believe ...

And, there are still new additions, every day, since, Del ...

Oh, I think you're right, there, Therwol ... both the F and the F2 ... were probably the very best mechanical SLRs ever made ... had 'em both ...

Read this Wikipedia article, in particular the Design History section. It explains the reliability issues with the FA.

Having said that, the one I gave my son in-law works fine.

Well, thereyago, Therwol ... the perfect father-in-law passes on a perfect camera (of a non-perfect model series) to his daughter's new husband ....

What a perfect scenario .... !!!!!

I gave it to him with a 50mm f/1.4 AI and a 35-105 AF-D, and every Christmas I buy him another lens. 70-210 F4 AIS, then 24mm f/2.8 AIS. I'm such a perfect person, I sometimes can't believe it. I'm already thinking about next year!!!!!

certainly the best by Nikon. but...ah, here we go. let us not forget the the Canon F1 series of bodies in their 3 iterations. they never sold like the Nikons, but that was because most U.S. Canon users were happy with their AE1 programs. also Canon was not thought of a a professional, or conflict system. and that's to bad. as a Nikon user i can still attest to the Canon f1's capabilities. have one on my desk and what's not to love. used it in the xxy# balkans.

Three iterations, WJ .... ?

I'd not realized the F1 was updated twice ... what was added in the later versions?

The AE1 was certainly popular, for a while, wasn't it, WJ? .... Until the A1 come along ...

The F1 was certainly a sturdy camera ... talk about being built like a tank! .... xxy# Balkans, huh? .... sounds really mysterious, WJ .... Marines?

Canon F1 and Ftb

I can only speak to my favorites, the Canon F-1 and F-1n. I still shoot with them. I also owned an FTb. I was slow to go digital but am currently getting used to a EOS 80d. Digital trumps analog that I do know. But Having fun getting up to speed, is all that matters.

Yes, it does, MadDawg ... at least now ... Digital trumps Analog ... 5 ways over, and inside out, too ...

And an EOS 80D should get you up to speed in a pretty short time ....

But, you know ... the Canon F1 series were mighty fine cameras ... they don't make 'em like THAT, anymore ....
