I have the same scanner. I use VueScan (paid version). It is available for Mac, Windows or Linux. It works well on all OS,s I have tried it on(Win 7 pro. Mac OS High Sierra and Ubuntu 16.04). It worked on Win 10 while I had it I trashed Win 10 because of many problems after the last update. Once you purchase it you can install on any computer you have.

I just discovered (painfully!) that my Nikon COOLSCAN V ED scanner, the really expensive one with all the bells and whistles (and expensive accessories) no longer works with the latest version of Windows on my PC. This seems to have happened after Windows latest 'update' was automatically installed.

To add insult, the good folks at Nikon want nothing to do with me – or rather, nothing to do with this scanner. Several calls to Nikon Customer Service and the best I got was:“We no longer support it!”

The scanner still is in fine working condition, except we (ie: PC, me and it) are no longer communicating. Tried removing and re-installing the original program disc that came with it. Nada.

Seems like there should be an easy 'fix' out there.

Any suggestions?

Silverfast is the best but it's pricey$$. $4-500.00.

You may want to try the above. Says it will work for Win 10

VueScan runs that scanner much much better than Nikon's software did, in my view.

Interesting you should say that. I went back to the original because there seemed to be a lot of processes missing in the VueScan. Did I miss something?

My Coolscan 5000 ED works just fine on Windows 10 with either Vuescan or Silverfast (sold as scanner specific) with no other software needed. I think the basic scanner drivers have been included in Windows since Vista so none are needed based on my experience. The biggest issue with the older Coolscan film scanners is the SCSI interface and not the scanner control.

If I understand correctly, that is why Linux was recommended to me - apparently some of the drivers are packaged with it.

The SCSI interface is the main consideration and not so much the OS. Most of the Coolscans came with a very basic SCSI adapter that has long since been unsupported with drivers.

"Easy" is in the eyes of the beholder.

It took me some time to track this down when I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 and my Coolscan 9000 stopped working. Here is what I found:

Windows 7: Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

In essence, it involves getting Windows 7 to use the Windows Vista driver. It has worked well for me now for several years. The only problem I have has is that I sometimes have to open up the Device Manager and "delete" the driver. The driver file remains in place and then it automatically re-installs itself.

If I am ever tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 it will not be on this PC. I will just disconnect it from the internet and use it just for the Coolscan.

I find the Nikon software to be perfectly fine for most images - color and B&W, negative or positive.

Silverfast works fine with my Epson V750. It's a little easier than Epson Scan but both do the job.

but my point was that Linux apparently is shipped with the needed drivers, so those drivers are not "unsupported" in the Linux world

OK, I appreciate the advice (much of which I admit I do not understand) but it looks like the most practical way to go is the Vuscan route. According to their website, the 'cheaper' version will not work to scan slides or film. That is all the Coolscan scans, so I guess I have to pop for the $90 version. Thanks to all!

So it works with flatbed scanners only? I wasn't aware of a basic difference between control of those and control of transparency scanners.

You need to update your scanning software. Vuescan will work. So will Silverfast AI, but it's a lot more expensive than Vuescan.

I am using Vuescan with a Nikon 4000 ED. It works pretty well, though I know Silverfast is even better.
