Xylitol is now being added to some peanut butters as a sweetener. It can be deadly to dogs.

And if humans eat enough of it, it will give them diarrhea (tip: sugar-free jelly beans with xylitol can be eaten every day as a treatment for constipation).

I know Sorbitol has that effect. I never eat anything that's labeled "low calorie" or "sugar-free" just for that reason. The list of ingredients is usually too long, and the type is too small to read.

It takes double the time to go shopping these days, because of all the reading you have to do on the labels. It gets very complicated.

Jerry - thanks for the post. I used yours to post on Facebook. We have two pups! Another warning to pet owners is the Swiffer Wet Jet. The cleaning solution is one step away from anti-freeze and has killed cats & dogs from licking their paws or the floor!

Just checked the Gum I've been chewing (DENTYNE ICE) full of sorbitol and aspartame .
no wonder I've been crapping 5 times a day. No more gum. Thanks Jerry.

Jeez and what's wrong with sugar, other than it converts to fat easily? All natural and about 20 calories per teaspoonful. Then look at the adverse effects of alternative sweeteners, starting with high-fructose corn syrup and going through all the artificial cancer producers the food industry loves to use. I love it when they go from a good ingredient to a cheaper, crappy one and try to make it sound like they're doing us a favor.

How about doing without *any* sweetener, natural OR artificial? I've cut way down but I still "need" my occasional shot of maple syrup on a banana.

"Swiffer Wet Jet Rumor Contradicted by the ASPCA. It is an urban myth that the Swiffer Wet Jet cloths and cleaners are unsafe to use around your pets. According to the Animal Poison Control Center of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Swiffer is a safe product to use with pets around. Sep 26, 2017"

Very good advice. When I told that to my neighbor who is a retired dental hygienist, she said Xylitol also prevents cavities.
I told her that would be good to know when I'm on the 'throne'.
