Orion Nebula (Ha) and Flame Nebula (LRGB & LHaGB)

Fired up the mono ATIK 428Ex (on the WO Megrez 90 with 0.8x reducer) with the Infinity software last night. I found the 428Ex and Infinity cameras perform about the same except the 428Ex is cooled.

Went after the Trapezium first (in Ha); one of my favorites for checking focus and configuration.

I came back to the Flame nebula later and think some thin cloud was getting in on the action? Processed it using Red as 'Red' and Ha as 'Red'.

Enjoy!

Another version of the Flame nebula. This one is a L(R+Ha)GB, i.e.: the R & Ha stacked as the Red channel.

Great job on your experiment. I have never seen that combination.

I noticed the horizontal lines in your ha image.....I get those same lines with my Atik383L camera. They are more noticeable with longer exposures which tells me it is an ATIK thing.....I have fussed with Atik but they, when they do answer, dismiss it with another question that usually goes something like this "have you tried different TEC deltas" I have both given up on the camera and trying to get a supporting answer form Atik.

I'm in the midst of a "discussion" with ATIK regarding the continual crashing of their 428Ex camera when run with the Infinity software. I was a beta tester for the Infinity software with the 428Ex and the beta software worked just fine; however, the final release is giving me all sorts of problems. I think the software crashed about 8-9 times during these imaging sessions; damned frustrating.

As for the horizontal lines in my image, I don't actually recall ever seeing them before BUT now you've drawn my attention to it I'll be checking previous imaging sessions for the problem...

I had a number of QHY CCD's in the past and two of these had random vertical line, not banding, problems. I returned one of the cameras; the replacement worked flawlessly. It was explained to me the sensor had lost a column of blue photosites. On the second camera they provided column correction software which eliminated the problem (but I'm sure it also eliminated some image data).

I've been playing with the subs from this session and have decided I like the simple Ha filter image the best... It was shot at 4x4 binning but still turned out the best, at least in my opinion.

Beautiful shot Brian, I will have to try 2x2 and 4x4 binning.
Other than being B&W what are the advantages of using them???

First, nice imaging Brian.
I do have a soft spot for B&W imaging. There is a certain cleanness to it.
And Ha... I should bring that back into play for grins and giggles.

When I was having a problem with my color Infinity I contacted Atik.
Long story short, I felt I got run around quite a bit by what I came to surmise was a nice old guy with more lip service than solid answers.
It finally lead to asking I return the camera, at which point I told them I wasn't the original purchaser. That slammed the door in my face.
Something that did come of the drawn out conversation was that they didn't think it was the software. But others I've been in touch with have also shared problems with the downloaded software.
I realize that with all the variables involved in dealing with the public it can't be easy to write bug-free software. But don't deny the possibility there can be a problem stemming from the software.
Because it'll come back to haunt you.
Most recently I've been experiencing some sort of an anomaly in the latest download. It opens a screen that is ghostly grey and one thing it shows is downloading updates. My only work around has been to go back to the desktop, reopen the program, then close the ghost. Which appears to shut down two bad programs.
I've gone to extremes to rid my computer of the problem, but it persists. No need to contact support, they are a lot like Microsoft Help. Or as it is, NO Help.

Sigh, although I really like the camera, somebody needs to realize the lack of support is killing the company. They need to get serious or they'll wither and die in this connected world.

2x2 binned is 4x faster, 4x4 binned is 16x faster... But also the image is 1/4 and 1/16 the area, respectively.

And the camera is a mono camera so B&W both binned and unbinned.
