Check these out available for most brands. The price can not be beat ( remember these prices are in Canadian $ ) and the build is solid.

Those are rebranded Godox. (also same as Adorama Flashpoint)
Should work great!

There seems to be a bewildering number of options available for remote flash triggers. I am interested in a unit that would remotely control 3 sb800 flashes including power adjustments. A money no object suggestion and middle of the road suggestion would be appreciated. Would there be a major advantage to upgrade to sb5000? I am using a D500. Thanks in advance for your help.

Why not the Nikon SU800 commander?

A good choice if you can keep all your compatible speedlights within sight and range of the commander.
I found the SU800's IR more powerful (effective?) than the pop-up.
It gives you more options and with the control panel right on the unit, you don't have to dig into the menu system to adjust anything.
Though I have no experience with it, here is a third-party unit, the Debao SU-800 sells for quite a bit le$$.. It's supposedly more powerful and the head rotates horizontally, unlike the Nikon.

Also sold as Vello by BH. I have no idea of the reliability, just putting out the alternative.
