Actually the original E mounts had synthetic mounts then it was changed because the stick in the muds reactionaries freaked out about it. Kind of like the first reaction to the M-16 not having wood. Now synthetic stocks are the norm for better properties than wood on nearly every rifle made today.
The "Heavy" lenses have metal mounts and those anticipating abusive use. Most non pros baby their equipment to extremes so mount damage is virtually impossible unless there is a drop and a synthetic mount that breaks would be a huge advantage as you are less likely to rip the front off your camera and perhaps even prevent further damage to the lens as the break point is right at the easily repairable mount.

Synthetic stocks are faster, easier and cheaper to make, not affected by moisture like wood and require no skill to get a proper fit, also high quality wood is getting hard to find.
By the way I hate the damn things, they have no class
As to the lens mounts I prefer metal, but see no real disadvantage to synthetic mounts.

I also prefer the fine walnut stocks of my firearms But it does make my M-16 considerably lighter.
But for standard to light use lenses properly engineered the mount should last as long as the motor and other electronics in it until it is declared too old to repair.. Most lens bodies are synthetic as well.
For example I have heard no complaints about the 80-400mm AFS VR which is largely made of synthetics. But where there is more stress the proper metal type was used.
Personally I generally trust the major manufacturers to make lenses that will be reasonably durable or face the wrath of UHH members which strikes the fear of God in those manufacturers.

I apologize to the OP for not having a solution to the OP problem. I like metal mount rather than plastic mount BUT I wouldn't want to replace the mount on any lens that is working correctly. Doing so can cause serious problem.

JC, you might want to check the Search feature at the top of this page. Enter Riggins and see what comes up.

If you want a lens with a metal mount, buy a Pentax. (At least, I think they still do.)

Yes they still do metal only. As I observed earlier, Pentax users are as bad as Nikon users with respect to their distrust of "plastics" and their views may influence the company.

But I'm guessing someone will complain this is OT.

I'm not going to complain as the OP about synthetic gun stocks and Pentax mounts, however, not much to do with the original question..........go figure, everyone has a comment/opinion and are free to express them here on the UHH. As long as this has gone sideways: anyone interested in purchasing my WIN Model 21 12 ga. Grand American (ca. mid 1930's), walnut stock, full beaver tail forearm, two sets of tubes: 30" full and full and 28" skeet 1 & 2 in a beaten up old leather hard case with an interesting history (I'm the second owner), feel free to PM me. chase

A question for all: Has anyone here on the UHH tried to or have replaced the plastic lens mount on any Nikkor lens with a metal one?

Background: I asked Nikon Support if they could replace the plastic lens mounts on my AF G type lenses with a metal mount.

Here is their response "Thank you for contacting Nikon. I am happy to help you today with your inquiry if we could replace plastic lens mounts with metal lens mounts on your two lenses.
At this time, we do not have metal lens mounts on our Nikon store. I do apologize for the inconvenience. The lenses are made with Nikkon specific technology, materials, workmanship and products.
If you need any more assistance, feel free to call or email us. Please Click the "Update My Question" link on the email to respond. For any other questions, please contact us via email or call us at 1-800-NikonUS or 1-800-645-6687 from 9:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m. EST.

Thanks in advance for any help regarding this matter you can provide. chase

P.S. For all you "just Google it first" folks, I thought it better to ask here first rather
than find some obtuse reference on the internet about this subject.

given that mosst of my nikon film equipment has and is used in conflict situations, i never use any nikkors with plastic mounts.
