QUESTION: I hear about batteries leaking, causing fires, expanding. Do you leave your batteries in your DSLRs or do you take it out if not used for say two months or so, or even a few days? Anyone have camera damage because of bad batteries. I have several cameras and use only Nikon OEM batteries. Thanks Bob
Never had a problem. Only take them out when they need recharging.
I leave them in the camera and in the grips. I do take them out of all but one flash because I don't use multiples very often.

Consider exercising the camera for a few shots every month, top off the battery and put it back in.
I leave my batteries in my cameras all the time. Never had problems. One has third party battery grip with rechargeable AA's. One has OEM battery and one has third party battery. The last camera I bought
used from ebay 3 years ago. So all of them are "aged". Only take out the battery to replace it with another. So if I pick one up to use it, I want it to work. No waiting

Leave the EN-EL15 Nikon batteries in my cameras. Don't leave regular AA size batteries in my SB910 speed light.

I kind of leave them in the camera most of the time, because it is not very long, before I use them again! It's not like it stays there for weeks! But if that would happen (don't use a camera for longer than a week, I would take them out)!
They should be taken out. I take the battery out of my camera when I return home after a photo shoot. This is from my D500 manual.

I swap 'em every two months but always have one in the camera. This keeps the non-replaceable clock battery from going flat.

Pics, I'm almost as reckless with my batteries as your are, but not quite.
I would NEVER put a lot of confidence in the cheap little $1 rechargeable AA batteries as you do.
With a $100 OEM single battery module I feel pretty confidant they will be ok over even a years time but would still take it out if I THOUGHT I would not use the camera for months. Or maybe it's just that nickel/metal rechargeables are less receptive to traditional leak and swelling problems.
But we all know for a fact that standard AA style batteries can and will leak and I would never leave them for extented periods of time knowning that a battery "might" leak.
But it's up to each person to gamble with their equipment as they wish!!!

When I put a camera back in its case I remove the battery to charge it. When the battery is charged, I return the charged battery to the case. The battery goes back in the camera when the camera is removed from the case. Backup batteries are stored in the miscellaneous parts case along with backup batteries for speedlites. Speedlights and their batteries are stored in the speedlite case. Speedlite batteries are removed for charging and returned to their own cases once charged to be returned to the speedlight case.
Leave them in and shoot often. Shooting often means they get recharged as needed.
I wasn't thinking about the AA's in the speedlights in my earlier post. I've had them leak so now leave the lights on the shelf with no batteries installed.

The only time I ever have taken a battery out is if I know I won't use a camera for at least a few months.
