The only cap I ever lost was on a pier in Catalina. The glue on the tether gave out as I leaned over the rail for a shot. Just my luck.
Oh, what a shame, Dan!
So, your TETHER - actually CAUSED you to lose your cap!!!!

If you had in in your pocket instead of on a tether you wouldn't have lost it.

Oh, I see ...
Well, if it were up to me, Whatdat ...
I'd slide it in in the pocket with the billfold ...
Nothing much could happen to it, there ...
And the extra bulk - would make you aware it was there, safe and sound ... sound like a good deal?
If you do not use a camera bag (where you could handily put the thing), how about just leaving the cap at home?
Use a tether, but slip the string around a finger of the hand that is holding the lens. Not flopping around and easy to get. No lint.

Hassig ... the open end of a proper lens tether is designed to go around the lens barrel ...
If you only kept it on your finger ... it'd slide off in a hurry ...
All of my lenses have 77mm caps/filters. I bought a cheap UV filter, bad mistake but that's another story. It came with a little vinyl pouch just the right size for a lens cap. I put the cap in it and then into a pocket. No lint or sand on the cap, or less chance of it anyway.
Haven't used a lens cap in years. Couldn't tell you where they have disappeared , probably hiding at the bottom of my backpack.

It is around the lens barrel. My finger holds up the slack so it does not flop around.
