Just curious did anyone serve on CV-62 (USS Independence), or BB-62 (USS New Jersey) or USS B----- Woods ( something like that, amphibious carrier).
Memory lane from Seattle Sea -Fest. 1988 or 89.

Our son, who just retired after 20 years as a Corpsman, was on the USS Belleau Woods, USS Kennedy, and the USNS Comfort.

That's it, and if i remember right it was amphibious, it had landing craft on board and they would sink the ship a bit to launch them. Cool

Had a hat from CVL 24, BB-62,USS Independence (CV-62). It was a great day at the sea fest, but the thing that I remember the most was on the New Jersey and I noticed the deck was made of wood and I asked an officer why, he told me that if they were to fire a full broadside with all 9 guns the ship would cave in on itself. Didn't really comprehend to much of this till we got to look in B turret, had a bullet- round what ever the thing is called (16 inch by3 feet) coming out the barrel, and I think it had 6- 220 lbs plugs of tnt next, the officer also told me that a full broadside moves the ship back three feet, true or not still got a WOW from me to say I was impressed would be an understatement.

We were told they used her for target practice, I believe. I think struck means she was removed from the rolls of navy vessels.
