I am looking at becoming more proficient in photography. I currently own a Canon T3i. Yes....quite old, I know, I am looking to upgrade and have done a lot of research. I do have a limited budget but have been considering the following. Canon T7i, Nikon 5600, Pentax K1 or KP. What do you all th9ng about these and are there better options that I should be considering?

Thanks,
Teresa

How many, and what lenses do you have?

What do you (want to) photograph?

How much time, money, and effort have you spent on photographing, and photographic education?

ANY camera can make an excellent photo if you know how.

JerryC will probably chime in here at some point with a lot of links to review sites. One I always point to is www.dpreview.com. Also check out YouTube. There are thousands of camera reviews and photography channels there.

teresa, welcome to UHH. You opened a can of worms because we are such a diverse group. With that said, I am a Nikon guy and will tell you with a limited budget, go for the Nikon 5600.

Top Highlights

24.2MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor
EXPEED 4 Image Processor
3.2" 1.037m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen

I assumed your budget is around $900

Consider the 18-140mm Lens lens for it. B&H is my favorite source. I checked Nikon refurbished for you and Adorama...a good source has them at $550 with a different lens but a great starter.

Have fun creating images with whatever decision you make.

Do research and find out for yourself. You have sufficient experience with cameras.

I'm a Nikon guy . . . BUT . . . If I already had lenses and accessories for my Canon T3i . . . I'd probably go with the T7i since it should be able to use the same lenses and accessories . . .

You have a fine camera, if I were you I would keep the camera and buy a good lens that will fit your needs.

Teresa, welcome to the Hog!
I was in your shoes in 08.
For me, it became very clear, very quickly.
I'm not one to buy everything new, as some are very prone to do so.
But, I looked at craig's list and there is simply TWICE as much used Canon gear than Nikon, let alone the smaller manufacturerers.
Next, Canon has the most complete system compared to any other brand, which includes lenses, printers, inks and papers.
3rdly, Canon's customer service is better than any other.
Lastly, more pros shoot Canon than ANY other brand. What do they know that some don't???
That doesn't tell you which body to buy, but buy it in the Canon line and buy what you can afford, either new, refurbed or used!
Again, welcome and good luck.

If you already have a Canon T3i, upgrading to another Rebel Series Canon T7i makes sense to me. The T7i is as good, if not better than a Nikon D5600. One You Tube Video I saw, claimed the Canon T7i was actually superior to the D5600. Look at other comparisons. As a Nikon DX owner, I have friends that shoot the Canon T5i. Better yet, if you can afford a Canon 80D, go for that one. That's a very good camera too. Good luck.

Teresa, ultimately the choice is going to be yours. However, there are a lot of folks on this site that will gladly spend your money for you. Your best bet is to do some soul searching regarding what you want to photograph, how often you want to photograph, etc. Then, do some research to see which cameras have the features you really need. All of the ones you mentioned are top cameras. I'd definitely get one that is a bit above your self assessed capabilities. That way you can grow into it and it won't be a limiting factor from the start.

Hi Teresa, you already have a perfectly good camera. My advice is to invest in lenses for the particular type of photography you intend to do. I shoot almost exclusively wildlife with my Canon T2i and my Canon 5D MKiii. Check out my flickr page to see the results. Some are done with the T2i and some with the 5D MKiii.

The T3i is not that old, especially since most reviewers considered the next couple of Rebels {T4i. T5i} to have been a waste of Canon effort ... i.e., not much improvement. You really do need to provide the additional requested information before any advice from here is going to have much value

(1) what kinds of subjects do you photograph?

(2) specifically what lenses do you have?

Before you spend money on a new camera, pick up some good books on digital photography and exposure, read them then find out if this newly gained knowledge helps you take better pictures with your T3i. If it does and you are happy with the results then ask yourself if you really need a better camera or just want one. If yes to either them seriously consider a refurbished 80D. Welcome to the UHH.

Good advice here, Teresa. I especially like the point that Bob (rmalarz) made about getting something that will give you room to grow in photography. I would suggest that, once you decide what features you think you will want in a camera, then go (no matter how far a drive) to a camera store and handle several camera bodies that have those features to see what feels best to you and which (you think) might be easier for you to adapt to.

Even though I prefer Pentax, I go along with others here, If you already have Canon gear, I'd stay with that line. Your current camera can be a backup for the new one. I came to digital from film based Pentax gearand my decision to stay with Pentax certainly helped protected a chunk of money I had already invested in lenses, filters and other accessories.
