I pray you and yours are going to be alright. My son is in Tampa, We are over in N.E.Florida. I'm worried for us all. Best of luck to you and yours.

Thanks for the good thoughts Roxie! Both my son and daughter and their families are here in Tampa, so we've got three houses. If your son needs any help have him contact me, I'll PM you my number(hope the cell phones don't go out too).

Susan, I think you'll be fine. Newer construction codes require homes to be able to withstand 150mph. If you've got shutters over the windows that's great. By the way, you have great pictures on your flickr account!

Thanks for the encouragement and yes, I am sure I will be fine. Thanks for the comment about Flickr also.

For all of you in Florida; our prayers will be with you. I've been through hurricanes & floods, but nothing like Harvey or Irma. Please be as safe as you can. And let us know how you are when you have a chance to. Godspeed.

I am in Tampa and we are supposed to get hit with cat 3 Irma tonight! Earlier in the week it was forecast to go up the east coast of the Florida peninsular but now it's going up the west coast. Too late now to try and go anywhere else so we're hunkered down and all batteries charged. I'm not near the water or in any evacuation zone, so the high wind is my only concern.

I'm in Sarasota and we too thought it would go up the east coast. Most gas stations ran out midweek and when they got in a new tanker it was gone in minutes. Hunkered down.

Florida has for many centuries been subject to many hurricanes, from weak to powerful, and those have contributed to the shape of the terrain. In the later two centuries, mankind has interposed his idea of what that terrain should look like. It is the man-made terrain that will be altered - whether that is good or bad is up to each individual to decide. Let us hope the property loss will be as low as possible.

Yep, everyone here has been in full panic mode for the past two days. And then there are the greedy. I saw a guy with a pickup truck at the gas station filling about 20 5gallon cans in the bed of his truck. When I asked him what he was going to do with all that gas he answered are you kidding I can sell this stuff for $5 a gallon tomorrow.

So much anxiety and anticipation of the trauma coming from the hurricane. My heart goes out to those leaving homes not knowing what they will come home to. Prayers for each and every person for whom this event will occupy their lives for a very long time coming. Lives altered, security terminated, most likely even loss of life. And I also must add, not because I'm advocating for its equivalent, but Florida has been a destination I've dreamed of for years as the ultimate for bird photography. Sadly, those magnificent bird populations are going to take a huge hit too...
Just a voice for open heartedness for all of life.

I lived through Hurricane Hugo's attack on Charlotte, NC (way inland!) in 1989. Almost a quarter million of us were without power, some up to 14 days. So I know what a hurricane can do. Many homes were damaged by falling trees and limbs, including ours.

My sister-in-law owns a condo on the beach in New Smyrna Beach, and has a house about ten miles inland. They drove up to Charlotte for a wedding this weekend, and will hang around for a few more days. They are *very* nervous... They had renters in the condo, and their house is on a slab, with a pool in the back yard.

Only about 20% of Floridians have flood insurance. I imagine that will change, now!

As of 5 pm, Irma made landfall and has been down graded to a cat2, that means winds are down to a manageable 115mph,and thats Great news.

Yes! I am happy with that (who whooda thunk I'd be happy with 115 mph winds)
