Packing for a trip is the worst part. I always leave something at home that I should have brought, or bring something that I should have left at home. At least I'll have the car for this trip, so I can bring as much as I want.

On Sunday, I leave for Provincetown for a week with a group of painters. Every year, a painting instructor friend runs a teaching session there. I go for the photography and just to get away. It's enough having to pack the clothes, photo gear, MacBook, and chargers. If I had to pack painting supplies as well, I'd have a nervous breakdown. I'm about 50% ready, with two days left, so I'm on schedule. My son will be looking after the dogs and the house, so that's one less thing to worry about. I hope to have some "snapshots" to post when I get back.

Safe travels Jerry.
Here's hoping Irma does not come your way.
Look forward to seeing your photos.

I agree. Even though I have elaborate packing lists, I still whip myself into a state of hysteria. There are the drugs--anti-malarial pills, pills for diarrhea, eight Pepto Bismol tablets a day to prevent diarrhea, antibiotics in case all else fails, cholesterol and prostate and Vit D pills, ibuprofen, decongestant, saline spray for the airplane portion, fever thermometer, band aids, New Skin for blisters, sun block, toiletries, line for hanging clothes washed in hotel room and concentrated wash soap. Then there's the photographic equipment and the backup devices, the chargers, the Kindle, the iPhone. The clothes are the least of it. And it all has to fit in carryons.

Are you bringing a tripod to use for a selfie of the class in action?

Provincetown is one of those 'special places' and the farthest east one can drive and not be in the ocean. My wife and I lived there forty years ago and it was a great place to be. Worked as a carpenter for a couple of brothers who painted houses, some of them were the houses of famous artists that lived there, Hans Hoffman is one who comes to mind. At that time there were still a few people living in the dunes. As they died out or left,
the National Seashore was taking them over.

I've heard reports that it is not as special now; things change and people do too.

Check out the Beech Forest in the National Seashore. I hope it is still there and the dunes haven't overtaken it!

Very timely topic as I'm packing today, leaving in the morning for a shoot in Panama. Just as Jerry said in OP, even after doing this dozens of times, with lists, I always pack stuff I won't use and neglect to pack something I could have used.
Tends to induce mild anxiety every packing day.

Oh you forgot a can of tire fixer in case your taxi gets a flat!

Packing could be a lot simpler. It's called cash. Pack a few bills into your wallet and you can buy products as you need them and not need to plan and carry it all. Rather, get it only as you need it. Your method is exactly why too many "what if's" cause strife in one's life! Cash saves a lot of headaches and carryons would be a lot lighter!

Good luck buying this stuff in Burma or Uganda, two places I've traveled to.

I have a tire plugging kit and a compressor. As for cash, I'll bring some of that and a couple of credit cards. I'll be there for about 90 hours, and I don't want to spend any time shopping.

"My bags are packed, and I'm ready to go..." (Peter, Paul, and Mary)

I got something like this years ago, and it works great.

Gentlemen and ladies, please ask a woman who packs regularly what she recommends for travel. I can pack in 20 minutes for a 23 day trip or 5 minutes for a long weekend. Including all my photo equipment.
First: Grab your money, credit cards and ID (passport if needed), Airline/train tickets as well. (without this step, all is lost)
Second: Keep all your toiletries in a dedicated kit that can hang on the back of the door. (refill it when you return so it is ready for the next trip)
Third: Pack enough underwear for each day plus 2 (includes socks, underpants, t-shirts, bras)
Fourth: Plan for weather. Need one poncho or rain proof jacket
Fifth: Pack shorts or long pants, seasonal determination and shoes (sneakers, hikers etc)
Sixth: Pack tops for the length of the stay plus 2 (for spills)
Seventh: Pack camera gear needed in photo backpack or slingback. Whichever works for you.
Eighth: Pack medications in daily sorters, put in plastic bag with slide closer

It should not take many lists to get it all together. This one should suffice. Everything you need should be accountable in one of these categories.
I have never left anything I needed at home and everything I need is usually in one suitcase and a camera bag.
Enjoy the trip.

So for a 23 day trip you pack 25 pairs of socks, underpants, t-shirts, and bras? I don't know anyone who even *owns* that many pairs. And since now you already have the maximum carry-on (photo backpack plus wheeled carry-on) how do you access the things you need on the airplane, things like sound cancelling headset, reading material, saline spray for your nose, wipes to clean off the germs on the seatback screen, the seatback tray, the armrests, medications you may need to take inflight, etc.? Are you pulling down your wheeled carry-on from the overhead to access these things?

I have an Excel spreadsheet that lists everything I might want to take. I usually don't take all of it, depending on where I am going and what I will be doing. For each trip I print out the list and as I pack that item I cross it out. I also cross out things that I am not taking. This way I don't forget anything.

Obvious things are not on the list: clothes, underwear, toiletries, etc.

I made it here, but I think I should have brought some things and left others home. Lists to be revised when I get home.

The weather is beautiful, though.
