Actually it's a difference of 100mm. 400mm minus 300mm = 100mm.
Zooming from wide angle to moderate zoom gives you no useful comparison. You're adding telephoto magnification only.
One thing you can do is take a shot with your current lens set to it's maximum: 300mm.... Then crop that image to 75% of it's original size. That will give you a pretty good idea of the angle of view of the 400mm lens on your camera.
On your camera your 300mm lens gives you an angle of view of 5 degrees and 20 minutes. A 400mm on your camera will give you 4 degree angle of view.
Thanks. Well, I figured with a DX the 300mm is equal to 450mm on a 35mm and 400mm is 600mm on a 35mm format. So 600-450=150mm diff. So I zoomed out to 300mm added a 1.4x which would be equal to 420mm which is close enough to 400mm and didn't think it was enough difference in the print to pay $649.
To each his own.
